Burakos, Party Leader
The Commander
Burakos is also a Cleric, Rogue, Warrior, and Wizard.
Whenever Burakos attacks, defending player loses X life and you create X Treasure tokens, where X is the number of creatures in your party.
Choose a Background (You can have a Background as a second commander.)
Guide
Gameplan
Assemble a full party (Cleric, Rogue, Warrior, Wizard) so Burakos drains opponents and spits out up to 4 Treasures every combat. You ramp aggressively off those Treasures into bigger threats and recursion, grinding life totals down while building toward a closing play. Burakos himself counts as all four party classes, so even a couple extra creatures fill the party fast.
Strengths
Weaknesses
- Mono-black with no evasion native to Burakos—gets chump-blocked easily
- Reliant on combat damage connecting and on Burakos sticking
- Vulnerable to board wipes erasing your party investment
- Wants creatures down before attacking, so early game can be slow
Key Cards
- Reaper King — Not in identity—ignore; instead lean on cheap multiclass creatures, but evasion enablers matter most for connecting.
- Whispersilk Cloak — Gives Burakos unblockable so the drain and Treasure trigger always land.
- Rogue's Passage — Pushes Burakos through for guaranteed party drain damage.
- Pitiless Plunderer — Turns your Treasures and dying tokens into a sacrifice/value engine.
- Revel in Riches — Treasures from Burakos pile up fast, threatening an alternate win.
- Tergrid, God of Fright — Combines black's drain and sacrifice themes to grind opponents while you ramp.
Upgrade Path
Add evasion (Whispersilk Cloak, Rogue's Passage, Trailblazer's Boots) so Burakos always connects, and protection like Swiftfoot Boots to keep him alive. Lean into Treasure payoffs—Pitiless Plunderer, Revel in Riches, Mahadi—and big black mana sinks like Torment of Hailfire and Exsanguinate to convert ramp into kills. Pick an aggressive Background such as Reckless Barbarian or Cultist of the Absolute, and tighten the mana base with fast rocks and tutors.
