Iron Spider, Stark Upgrade
The Commander
Guide
Gameplan
Iron Spider anchors a colorless artifact-counters deck that floods the board with artifact creatures and Vehicles, then taps each turn to pump them all simultaneously into a lethal swing. Early turns develop cheap artifact creatures and mana rocks, mid-game you tap Iron Spider to snowball counters across the team, and late-game you convert excess counters into cards or alpha-strike. Vigilance lets you attack and still hold the activation back as a deterrent.
Strengths
- Anchors a fully colorless artifact strategy, so it slots into any color identity or stays mono-artifact
- Board-wide counter growth scales hard with go-wide artifact token production
- Built-in card advantage engine via the counter-to-draw ability prevents running out of gas
- Vigilance plus counter accumulation makes it both an attacker and a defensive wall
Weaknesses
- Slow without ramp — the tap ability only triggers once per turn and does nothing the turn it enters
- Heavily reliant on the commander; repeated removal or counter-removal stalls the whole engine
- Colorless limits access to premium interaction, sweepers, and tutors
- Vulnerable to board wipes since the deck commits many artifact creatures to the field
Key Cards
- Hardened Scales — Doubles-up Iron Spider's payload by adding an extra counter every time it distributes them across your board.
- Branching Evolution — Doubles the +1/+1 counters Iron Spider places on every artifact creature and Vehicle at once for explosive growth.
- Walking Ballista — Soaks up Iron Spider's counters and converts them into repeatable removal or a direct win by pinging opponents.
- Steel Overseer — A second anvil that pumps your artifact creatures, stacking with Iron Spider for runaway board states.
- Cathars' Crusade — Turns each token-making artifact into more triggers, though Iron Spider's mass-counter plan already loves wide boards.
- Urza's Saga — Generates a Construct token that scales with your artifact count and tutors up a key piece like Walking Ballista.
Upgrade Path
Add counter-doublers like Hardened Scales, Branching Evolution, and Doubling Season to multiply every activation, and lean on fast mana such as Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, and the talismans to deploy Iron Spider plus a payload early. Tighten the curve with efficient artifact creatures (Walking Ballista, Hangarback Walker, Steel Overseer) and protect the commander with Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots. Top-end consistency comes from Urza's Saga, Karn, the Great Creator, and tutors like Tinker or Whir of Invention to assemble your best pieces.

Archetypes
- Artifacts (+1/+1 Counters) — Iron Spider rewards a critical mass of artifact creatures and Vehicles by buffing the entire team each turn.
- Tokens — Go-wide artifact token makers maximize the value of a single board-wide counter activation.
- Vehicles — The ability explicitly counts Vehicles, letting crew-light builds grow and attack with massive constructs.
- Combo — Counter-doublers plus Walking Ballista or Hangarback Walker enable counter-fueled removal and incremental wins.
