Marrow-Gnawer
The Commander
Guide
Gameplan
Marrow-Gnawer is a mono-black Rat tribal commander that snowballs token counts exponentially: sacrifice one Rat to make a number of tokens equal to how many Rats you already control. You build a wide board of Rats, activate the ability to double-plus your army, give them all evasion via Marrow-Gnawer's fear, and swing for lethal—often aided by an anthem or overrun effect. Early turns ramp and deploy cheap Rats; mid-game you snowball with the tap ability and protect the board.
Strengths
- Exponential token generation that can produce a lethal army in a single turn once you have a few Rats
- Built-in evasion (fear) makes the whole team nearly unblockable in most metas
- Mono-black gives access to powerful ramp, tutors, and recursion
- Wide boards synergize with aristocrats payoffs and overrun-style finishers
Weaknesses
- Extremely vulnerable to board wipes; one Wrath can undo all your work
- The combo relies on Marrow-Gnawer surviving and being untapped, so removal and tap-down effects hurt
- Tribal Rats are a shallow card pool with many weak bodies
- Summoning sickness and tap requirement mean it telegraphs the turn before it goes off
- Fear doesn't stop artifact or black creatures from blocking
Key Cards
- Ratadrabik of Urborg — While not a Rat himself in flavor he supports tokens, but more importantly mono-black token doublers like this amplify your output (use a true doubler).
- Pack Rat — Discard a card to make a Rat, and Pack Rats grow with your swarm, providing extra bodies to fuel and benefit from Marrow-Gnawer.
- Ogre Slumlord — Creates a 1/1 Rat whenever any nontoken creature dies, fueling your sacrifices and providing deathtouch anthem support.
- Swarmyard — Regenerates your Rats, protecting Marrow-Gnawer and your key tokens from damage-based removal.
- Coat of Arms — Turns a wide Rat board into a massive lethal swing with fear evasion.
- Skullclamp — Sacrificing the 1/1 Rats draws two cards each, turning your expendable tokens into relentless card advantage.
- Ashnod's Altar — Sacrifice Rats for mana to refuel and combo with token doublers and recursion.
- Gravepact — Each Rat sacrifice or death forces opponents to sacrifice creatures, controlling the board.
Upgrade Path
Add token doublers (Doubling Season, Parallel Lives) and anthem/overrun effects (Coat of Arms, Shared Animosity, Craterhoof-style finishers in black via Overwhelming Stampede analogs) to make the exponential army immediately lethal. Lean into aristocrats (Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, Pitiless Plunderer) and free sac outlets (Ashnod's Altar, Carrion Feeder, Phyrexian Altar) so the deck wins through drain even into board wipes. Round out with strong mono-black staples—Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Skullclamp, and protection like Swarmyard and Cavern of Souls—to find and shield your combo pieces.
