Nashi, Moon Sage's Scion
The Commander
Ninjutsu (
, Return an unblocked attacker you control to hand: Put this card onto the battlefield from your hand tapped and attacking.)
Whenever Nashi deals combat damage to a player, exile the top card of each player's library. Until end of turn, you may play one of those cards. If you cast a spell this way, pay life equal to its mana value rather than paying its mana cost.
Guide
Gameplan
Nashi is a mono-black ninja-tribal value engine: deploy cheap evasive attackers, swap them out with ninjutsu to land Nashi unblocked, then steal and cast the top card of every player's library by paying life instead of mana. You snowball card advantage and cast opponents' bombs for free while their libraries feed you, closing through accumulated value and recursive theft.
Strengths
- Generates explosive card advantage by raiding all libraries every combat
- Pays life instead of mana, letting you cast expensive opposing bombs for cheap
- Ninjutsu makes Nashi cheap to recast and dodges removal/blocks
- Mono-black gives deep tutors, recursion, and life-gain support
Weaknesses
- Relies on connecting in combat, so flyer/evasion enablers and unblocked attackers are essential
- Life payments can be punishing in fast or aggressive metas
- Single-color limits answers to artifacts, enchantments, and resilient permanents
- Vulnerable to board wipes and graveyard/library hate disrupting the engine
Key Cards
- Ornithopter — A free evasive attacker that ninjutsu can return to hand to deploy Nashi unblocked.
- Changeling Outcast — Unblockable one-drop that is also a Ninja, making it the perfect ninjutsu carrier.
- Bident of Thassa — Forces opponents to attack, but more importantly its draw effect pairs with go-wide ninja damage triggers.
- Whispersilk Cloak — Grants Nashi unblockable and hexproof so the steal trigger reliably connects.
- Sword of Feast and Famine — Untaps your lands after combat damage, fueling the life-paid casting and protecting Nashi.
- Bolas's Citadel — Doubles down on the pay-life-instead-of-mana plan and pairs perfectly with library manipulation.
Upgrade Path
Add premium evasive one-drops (Changeling Outcast, Slither Blade) and ninjutsu enablers, plus protection like Lightning Greaves and Whispersilk Cloak to guarantee connects. Lean into life-as-resource payoffs (Bolas's Citadel, K'rrik) and topdeck manipulation (Sensei's Divining Top, Brainstorm-style effects with black tutors) to control what you exile. Round out with fast mana (Sol Ring, Mana Crypt) and black tutors to assemble the engine sooner.
