The Walls of Ba Sing Se
The Commander
Defender
Other permanents you control have indestructible.
Guide
Gameplan
You ramp aggressively with colorless mana rocks into giant Eldrazi and threats, using The Walls of Ba Sing Se as an unkillable wall that blanks every opponent's board wipe by making all your other permanents indestructible. Early turns are spent stabilizing behind defenders and rocks; mid-game you cast Kozilek/Ulamog-tier finishers that simply can't be wrathed away. The commander itself never attacks (Defender), so it's a value engine and protective shield while your real bombs do the killing.
Strengths
- Total immunity to destruction-based board wipes (Damnation, Wrath, Blasphemous Act) for your whole board
- Defender plus a huge body makes the commander a brick wall on defense while protecting everything
- Synergizes beautifully with Eldrazi annihilator/big-mana strategies that want to commit big threats safely
- Protects fragile combo pieces and mana rocks from spot removal that targets destruction
Weaknesses
- Colorless color identity is extremely restrictive — no counterspells, no targeted interaction in colors, weak card draw
- 8 mana commander means it arrives late; you can be dead before it lands
- Indestructible does nothing against exile, sacrifice, bounce, -X/-X, or 'can't block' effects
- No evasion or built-in win condition from the commander itself
- Vulnerable while the commander is in the command zone or removed by exile
Key Cards
- Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger — Indestructible-protected finisher that exiles permanents on cast and mills out the table over a few attacks.
- Kozilek, the Great Distortion — Refills your hand on cast and provides a massive evasive-ish threat that survives any wrath.
- Walking Ballista — A colorless win condition and removal engine that becomes a permanent indestructible cannon once the commander is out.
- Wurmcoil Engine — Lifegain and value body that, made indestructible, becomes a near-unremovable defensive anchor.
- Eldrazi Temple — Premier colorless ramp to accelerate into the commander and your big Eldrazi quickly.
- Mana Crypt — Explosive colorless acceleration essential to casting an 8-mana commander on curve.
- Eye of Ugin — Tutors Eldrazi and reduces their cost, fueling the whole top-end plan.
- Karn Liberated — Colorless planeswalker that exiles problem permanents, sidestepping your own indestructible limitations.
Upgrade Path
Lean into the fastest colorless ramp — Mana Crypt, Sol Ring, Mana Vault, Grim Monolith, and the Tron/Cloudpost lands — to land the commander or an Eldrazi ahead of schedule. Add resilient win packages like Walking Ballista with infinite-mana enablers (Basalt Monolith + Rings of Brighthearth) and exile-based interaction (Karn Liberated, Ugin, Spine of Ish Sah loops) so you aren't relying solely on destruction. Tighten the curve with cost reducers (Eldrazi Temple, Eye of Ugin, Sanctum of Ugin) and protect against the exile/bounce that your indestructible plan can't answer.
