Traxos, Scourge of Kroog
The Commander
Trample
Traxos enters tapped and doesn't untap during your untap step.
Whenever you cast a historic spell, untap Traxos. (Artifacts, legendaries, and Sagas are historic.)
Guide
Gameplan
Traxos is a 7/7 trample beater for 4 that wants to crack in every turn, but it only untaps when you cast a historic spell (artifacts, legendaries, Sagas). Build a dense colorless artifact deck that chains cheap and free artifacts to keep Traxos online and swing for big colorless damage, supplemented by artifact-based ramp and equipment.
Strengths
- Cheap, oversized trampler that closes games fast in a colorless shell
- Colorless identity lets you abuse powerful Eldrazi, artifact lands, and unrestricted artifact ramp
- Synergizes with the huge pool of cheap and free-to-cast artifacts to stay untapped
- Resilient gameplan that can rebuild via mass artifact recursion
Weaknesses
- If you fail to cast a historic spell, Traxos stays tapped and does nothing
- Colorless decks lack efficient interaction, card draw, and removal compared to colored decks
- Vulnerable to a single removal spell or board wipe, with no protective colors
- Can flood on artifacts that don't impact the board, leaving you with a do-nothing pile
Key Cards
- Mox Opal — A free historic spell that untaps Traxos while ramping you in a heavy-artifact deck.
- Lightning Greaves — Haste and shroud let Traxos attack the turn it lands and dodge removal.
- Hammer of Nazahn — Indestructible plus auto-attaching equipment make Traxos a near-unkillable threat.
- Inventors' Fair — Tutors for any artifact to find your enablers or wincons and gains incidental life.
- Karn, the Great Creator — Locks down opposing artifacts and fetches answers from the sideboard-style toolbox.
- Voltaic Key — Cheap historic artifact that untaps Traxos (and your mana rocks) repeatedly.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and free artifacts (Mox Diamond, Chrome Mox, Mishra's Bauble, Ornithopter) to reliably untap Traxos and ramp ahead. Prioritize tutors (Inventors' Fair, Whir of Invention) and protection (Lightning Greaves, Hammer of Nazahn, Darksteel Plate), and lean into a Karn/Lattice or Eldrazi top-end plus artifact recursion like Goblin Welder–style effects and Buried Ruin to grind through removal.
