What it does

"Ally" is a creature type, not a keyword ability—it appeared prominently in the Zendikar blocks. Many Allies have abilities that trigger "whenever this creature or another Ally enters the battlefield under your control," creating a tribal payoff that snowballs as you flood the board. The biggest misconception is treating Ally as an ability—it does nothing on its own. The triggers come from individual cards, and they only care about Allies you control entering, not opponents'. Also, the Ally entering itself usually counts toward its own trigger, since it's checking "this creature or another Ally." In Commander, Allies are a casual tribal archetype. They reward going wide and benefit from blink, token, and recursion effects. Commanders like General Tazri or Kalemne anchor the deck, but the strategy is generally lower-powered and synergy-dependent rather than competitive.
