What it does
Assist lets other players help pay the generic portion of a spell's cost. When you cast a spell with Assist, before you pay, any other player may pay some or all of the generic mana in that spell's cost. You still pay any colored mana requirements and the rest yourself.
The common misunderstanding: Assist only applies to generic mana symbols, not colored or hybrid ones. Helpers can't pay your colored pips, and they can't help with additional or alternative costs—just the generic mana of the listed mana cost. Also, you remain the spell's caster and controller; the assistance is purely financial.
In Commander, Assist shines in multiplayer politics—you can bargain with opponents to "fund" a big spell that benefits the table, or in a two-headed-style alliance. It's a niche mechanic, but great for splashy, expensive bombs you couldn't otherwise afford.
