What it does

Entwine appears on modal spells (usually sorceries or instants) that ask you to "choose one or both." Normally you pick just one mode, but by paying the Entwine cost in addition to the spell's mana cost, you get to choose both modes when you cast it. The key nuance: Entwine is paid as an additional cost while casting, so you decide whether to entwine before the spell is on the stack—you can't change your mind later, and opponents see the full effect coming. Also, if a mode targets, you must have legal targets for the modes you choose; entwining doesn't let you skip a mode that has no legal target unless the spell allows it. In Commander, Entwine shines as flexibility for fewer cards—older cards like Tooth and Nail famously win games when entwined, tutoring two creatures and putting them directly into play.
