What it does

Fateful hour is a conditional ability that turns on whenever you have 5 or less life. While that condition is met, the card with fateful hour gains a bonus effect—often a powerful, game-swinging ability meant to reward (or save) you when you're nearly dead. For example, Angelic Overseer or Thunderous Wrath-style effects, though the classic is cards like Faith's Shield, which grants protection from a color to your stuff when you're at 5 or less. The key nuance: it checks your current life total continuously, not just when the spell resolves. If your life rises above 5, the fateful hour bonus stops applying; if it drops to 5 or less, it kicks in. It's a static threshold, not a one-time trigger. In Commander, the high starting life of 40 makes fateful hour harder to enable, so it's situational—mostly relevant in grindy games or after big life-loss swings.
