What it does
Formidable is a condition, not an ability with ongoing effects: it's "active" whenever the total power of creatures you control is 8 or greater. Cards with Formidable typically read "[Cost], [tap], Formidable — do something powerful," letting you unlock big payoffs once your board reaches that threshold.
The most common mistake is thinking Formidable counts the number of creatures—it counts total power. Three 3/3s (power 9) qualify; eight 1/1s (power 8) qualify; but a swarm of weak tokens might not. It checks only creatures you control, and only at the moment you activate or trigger the relevant ability—so removal, pump, or losing creatures can flip it on or off.
In Commander, Formidable rewards go-wide and go-tall green aggro decks. It's easy to enable here thanks to large commanders, fat creatures, and token swarms, making those abilities reliably online by mid-game.
