What it does

Hellbent is a conditional ability that checks whether you have no cards in your hand. Cards with Hellbent get a bonus or improved effect while you're "hellbent"—meaning your hand is empty. For example, a creature might deal extra damage or gain an ability only when you have zero cards in hand. The common misunderstanding is thinking Hellbent counts cards in graveyard, exile, or anywhere else—it strictly cares about your hand being empty. Also, it's not a one-time trigger; it's a continuous check, so the bonus turns on and off as your hand size changes. Drawing a card immediately switches it off. In Commander, Hellbent rewards aggressive, low-curve or discard-heavy decks (think Rakdos or mono-black aggro). It's less common in grindy, card-advantage-focused builds since most EDH strategies want a full hand, making empty-hand payoffs niche but powerful in dedicated shells.
