What it does

"Magic" isn't actually a keyword or ability in Magic: The Gathering—it's the name of the game itself, often styled "Magic: The Gathering" or shortened to MTG. There's no rules text or mechanic called "Magic" that appears on cards. You may be thinking of something else. Cards reference "spells" (anything on the stack), "abilities" (activated, triggered, or static), or specific keywords like Flying, Trample, or Flash. If someone says a card "does magic," they probably mean it has an effect, casts a spell, or uses an ability. In Commander, precision matters—calling everything "magic" can cause confusion at the table. When discussing interactions, specify whether you mean a spell, an activated ability, or a triggered ability, since they respond differently to counters, stifles, and timing rules.
