What it does

"Scavenge the Dead" isn't a standard Magic keyword—it doesn't exist in the official rules or on any printed card. You may be thinking of Scavenge, the actual mechanic from Dragon's Maze. Scavenge lets you pay a cost and exile a creature card from your graveyard to put a number of +1/+1 counters equal to that card's power onto a target creature. It's an activated ability you use entirely from the graveyard, only at sorcery speed (your main phase, empty stack). The big mistake players make: scavenge doesn't cast the creature—it exiles it permanently for counters, so you can't get it back. In Commander, scavenge gives graveyard value and dodges counterspells, but counters fall off if the buffed creature dies. It pairs well with proliferate or counter-doubling effects to stretch that one-time investment further.
