What it does
Shadow is an evasion ability: a creature with shadow can only block or be blocked by other creatures with shadow. This effectively splits combat into two separate "planes"—shadow creatures fight other shadow creatures, while non-shadow creatures fight among themselves.
The biggest misconception is thinking shadow creatures are unblockable. They're not—a shadow creature can be blocked, but only by another shadow creature. Likewise, a shadow creature can only block other shadow creatures, never your opponent's normal attackers. So shadow creatures are poor defenders against a typical board.
In Commander, shadow is rare and almost nobody runs it, so a shadow creature is functionally unblockable and undefendable in most pods. That makes them reliable damage and great carriers for voltron-style equipment or auras, though their fragility (often small bodies) and lack of defensive utility limits their appeal.
