What it does
Split second means that while a spell with this ability is on the stack, players can't cast other spells or activate abilities that aren't mana abilities. Essentially, you get to resolve your spell in a window where nobody can respond—no counterspells, no removal, no instant-speed interaction.
The big misconception is that split second stops everything. It doesn't. Mana abilities still work, and—crucially—triggered abilities still trigger and go on the stack normally. So if something triggers in response to the split second spell, that trigger will resolve. It also doesn't stop state-based actions or special actions like turning a face-down creature face up. You also can't be stopped by activated abilities, but triggers that were already waiting can still matter.
In Commander, split second cards like Sudden Demise, Krosan Grip, or Extirpate are prized for cutting through a table full of counterspells and protection. It's a clean answer when you absolutely need a resolution to stick.
