What it does
Squad is a casting option that lets you pay an extra cost (listed after the keyword) one or more times as you cast the creature. For each time you pay, you create a token copy of that creature when it enters. So if Squad costs
and you pay it twice, you get the original plus two token copies—three bodies total.
The key nuance: Squad payments happen as part of casting, not as a triggered ability, so they can't be countered separately, and the copies aren't "cast"—they're created as the creature enters, meaning cast-triggers won't fire for them. The tokens are copies of the printed creature, ignoring any copy effects or counters.
In Commander, Squad shines with big mana and go-wide synergies—anthem effects, sacrifice fodder, or token doublers like Doubling Season, which doubles each Squad token you'd create.
