Agent Venom
The Commander
Guide
Gameplan
Agent Venom is a mono-black aristocrats engine: flood the board with cheap, expendable creatures and sacrifice them for value, drawing a card each time a nontoken creature dies. You grind the game out by converting your dying creatures into cards, then leverage that card advantage and life-draining payoffs to close. Flash and menace let you deploy him as a surprise blocker and chip in damage when needed.
Strengths
- Repeatable, color-screw-proof card draw in mono-black, which is normally card-advantage-starved
- Cheap commander (3 MV) that comes down early and is hard to block thanks to menace
- Synergizes with the deep mono-black sacrifice, recursion, and reanimation toolbox
- Flash gives flexibility to ambush attackers or react at instant speed
Weaknesses
- Only triggers off nontoken creatures, so pure token strategies don't fuel his draw
- Life loss can snowball against burn or aggressive aristocrats mirrors
- Mono-black means little interaction with enchantments and limited artifact removal
- No built-in win condition—needs payoffs to convert card advantage into damage
- Board wipes can drain a lot of life at once if you're not careful
Key Cards
- Viscera Seer — Free sacrifice outlet that lets you loop creatures into cards at instant speed with scry attached.
- Carrion Feeder — A no-cost sac outlet that grows, turning every dying creature into draws and a threat.
- Blood Artist — Pairs with the dies triggers so each sacrifice drains opponents while you draw.
- Zulaport Cutthroat — A second Blood Artist effect that turns mass death into a life-total win condition.
- Gravecrawler — Recurs from the graveyard repeatedly to be sacrificed, generating endless draws and drains.
- Pitiless Plunderer — Makes Treasure on each creature death, fueling explosive sacrifice loops with Agent Venom.
- Midnight Reaper — Stacks with Agent Venom for doubled draw-on-death, accelerating your engine.
Upgrade Path
Add free sacrifice outlets (Viscera Seer, Carrion Feeder, Ashnod's Altar) and persistent recursion (Gravecrawler, Reassembling Skeleton, Nether Traveler) to make the engine self-sustaining. Layer in multiple drain payoffs (Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, Bastion of Remembrance) and a draw doubler like Midnight Reaper, then assemble a true combo finish such as Gravecrawler + Phyrexian Altar + Blood Artist. Fast mana (Dark Ritual, Jet Medallion) and tutors (Demonic Tutor, Diabolic Intent) let you find pieces faster and push to a higher bracket.

Win Conditions
- ▸Drain the table with Blood Artist / Zulaport Cutthroat effects via mass sacrifice
- ▸Assemble an infinite sac loop (e.g., Gravecrawler-type engine) for unbounded drain
- ▸Grind out card advantage and beat down with menace and recurring threats
- ▸Reanimate a large threat and convert overwhelming card draw into a closing play
Archetypes
- Aristocrats — His dies-trigger draw rewards sacrificing creatures, the core aristocrats loop.
- Reanimator — Black's reanimation lets you keep recurring fodder to re-sacrifice for value.
- Combo — Free sac outlets plus recursion plus drain payoffs assemble lethal sacrifice loops.
- Tokens — Token generators provide chump fodder, though Agent Venom's draw needs nontoken bodies.
