Ardyn, the Usurper
The Commander
Demons you control have menace, lifelink, and haste.
Starscourge — At the beginning of combat on your turn, exile up to one target creature card from a graveyard. If you exiled a card this way, create a token that's a copy of that card, except it's a 5/5 black Demon.
Guide
Gameplan
Ardyn is a mono-black reanimator-tribal hybrid: each combat you exile a creature card from any graveyard and stamp out a 5/5 Demon copy of it that swings immediately thanks to haste, lifelink, and menace. You ramp into Ardyn around turn 5-6 with rituals and mana rocks, fill graveyards (yours and opponents'), then grind out value Demon tokens every turn while attacking and gaining life. Demon payoffs and sacrifice synergies turn the tokens into both a beatdown and a value engine.
Strengths
- Free recursion every combat with no card spent, raiding any graveyard including opponents'
- Tokens are full 5/5 Demons with the original's abilities plus evasion, lifelink, and haste — instant pressure
- Mono-black gives access to the deck's best tutors, ramp, and recursion
- Punishes opponents' creature decks by stealing their fatties as your Demons
- Lifelink keeps you alive through aggressive racing
Weaknesses
- Eight mana to cast and the engine does nothing without Ardyn on the battlefield
- Heavily commander-dependent; repeated removal/exile shuts the deck off
- Graveyard hate (Rest in Peace, Bojuka Bog) cripples Starscourge
- Mono-black struggles with enchantments and resilient permanents
- Slow to set up compared to faster combo decks at high tables
Key Cards
- Rune-Scarred Demon — A Demon that tutors on cast or as a copied token, and Ardyn gives the whole class menace, lifelink, and haste.
- Buried Alive — Dumps three fat creatures into your graveyard so Starscourge has premium targets immediately.
- Liliana, Dreadhorde General — Token Demons feed her, and she draws cards and removes threats to protect Ardyn's engine.
- Cabal Coffers — With Urborg it generates the explosive mana mono-black needs to cast an 8-mana commander early and recast it after removal.
- Gray Merchant of Asphodel — Demon-heavy black devotion plus lifelink makes Gary a recurring life-swing finisher you can even copy.
- Phyrexian Reclamation — Cheap repeatable recursion to refill the yard or rebuy creatures the Demons sacrifice.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and rituals (Dark Ritual, Cabal Ritual, Jet Medallion, Bubbling Muck) plus Cabal Coffers/Nykthos to deploy Ardyn ahead of curve and rebuild after removal. Lean into self-mill and discard outlets (Entomb, Stitcher's Supplier, Faithless-style loots) so Starscourge always has elite targets, and protect the commander with Imp's Mischief, Malakir Rebirth, and Swiftfoot Boots. Top-end upgrades like Sheoldred, the Apocalypse, Massacre Wurm, and Sheoldred, Whispering One give the copy effect maximum impact, while Bolas's Citadel and Demonic tutors raise consistency.

Win Conditions
- ▸Repeated combat damage from evasive, lifelinking 5/5 Demons
- ▸Aristocrats drain via Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, or Gray Merchant
- ▸Copying a game-ending creature like Massacre Wurm or Sheoldred from a graveyard
- ▸Recurring Craterhoof-style or overrun effects to alpha strike with the Demon army
Archetypes
- Demon Tribal — Ardyn buffs all your Demons and turns reanimated creatures into 5/5 Demons, rewarding a Demon-themed shell.
- Reanimator — Starscourge is built-in recursion, so loading graveyards and casting reanimation spells multiplies your value.
- Aristocrats — A steady stream of expendable Demon tokens fuels sacrifice outlets and drain effects.
- Midrange Beatdown — Lifelink, haste, and menace make a wide Demon board that races and stabilizes simultaneously.
