Aunt May
The Commander
Whenever another creature you control enters, you gain 1 life. If it's a Spider, put a +1/+1 counter on it.
Guide
Gameplan
Aunt May is a mono-white creature-flood engine that gains you life and grows your Spiders every time a creature enters. You curve out with cheap creatures and token-makers, leverage lifegain payoffs and go-wide anthems, and either build a wide Spider/Citizen board or convert mass lifegain into a finisher. Early turns establish board presence; mid-game you flood with tokens and counters; late-game you alpha strike or combo off lifegain triggers.
Strengths
- Cheap one-mana commander that comes down early and starts generating value immediately
- Strong synergy with token generators and blink effects for repeated ETB triggers
- Built-in lifegain keeps you alive against aggro and fuels white lifegain payoffs
- Spider tribal counters make a focused Spider build resilient and reach-heavy
Weaknesses
- Mono-white means limited card draw and ramp compared to other colors
- Effects are incremental and low-impact without payoffs—lifegain alone doesn't win
- Board wipes are devastating since the deck commits many creatures
- Spider tribal lacks deep, powerful support compared to other tribes
Key Cards
- Arachnogenesis — Floods the board with Spiders for a wave of counters and triggers while fogging combat.
- Anointed Procession — Doubles every token, multiplying both the lifegain and Spider counter triggers.
- Heliod, Sun-Crowned — Turns your constant lifegain into +1/+1 counters and enables lifegain combos.
- Felidar Sovereign — Converts the deck's massive lifegain into an outright alternate win condition.
- Skullclamp — Solves mono-white's card draw problem by sacrificing your steady stream of tokens.
- Cathars' Crusade — Every creature ETB pumps your whole board, snowballing alongside May's triggers.
Upgrade Path
Add efficient token engines and ETB-blink loops (Conjurer's Closet, Restoration Angel effects) to maximize triggers, and lean into lifegain payoffs like Heliod, Sun-Crowned and Aetherflux Reservoir for combo finishes. Round out mono-white's weaknesses with card-draw rocks like Skullclamp, Welcoming Vampire, and Mentor of the Meek, plus protection like Teferi's Protection and Flawless Maneuver against the board wipes this strategy fears most.
