Boromir, Warden of the Tower
The Commander
Guide
Gameplan
Boromir is a mono-white stax/hatebears commander who taxes free spells and protects your board. You deploy a value-driven creature army, lean on the static ability to punish free-cast and cascade/storm strategies, and use the sacrifice ability as a one-shot board protection against wraths. Win through efficient creatures, equipment, or go-wide token swarms backed by anthems.
Strengths
- Hard counters all free spells from opponents — devastating against Force of Will, free counterspells, and ad nauseam free-cast lines
- The sacrifice ability gives a free indestructible blowout against board wipes or as an alpha-strike enabler
- Cheap three-mana body with vigilance attacks and blocks
- The Ring tempts you gives ongoing card advantage and evasion from the sacrifice trigger
Weaknesses
- Mono-white means weak card draw and ramp without dedicated package
- The counter ability only hits free spells — it does nothing against normally-cast spells
- Sacrificing him is a one-time effect and removes your commander
- Vulnerable to targeted removal before you can use the sac ability
Key Cards
- Smothering Tithe — Premier mono-white ramp and card-advantage engine to overcome the color's weaknesses.
- Esper Sentinel — Tax-based hatebear that draws cards and complements Boromir's anti-free-spell theme.
- Swords to Plowshares — Best-in-class white removal to protect your board and clear blockers.
- Heliod, Sun-Crowned — Anthem plus lifegain payoff that helps a go-wide soldier plan.
- Cataclysm — Mono-white stax piece that resets the board while Boromir's indestructible sac protects your side.
Upgrade Path
Add mono-white ramp and card draw (Smothering Tithe, Land Tax, Mind's Eye, Welcoming Vampire) to fix color weaknesses, then layer in efficient hatebears (Thalia, Drannith Magistrate, Archon of Emeria) to amplify the stax angle. Round out with strong protection and removal (Teferi's Protection, Path to Exile, Generous Gift) and a tight win package of anthems or a Voltron equipment suite to close games faster.
