Fandaniel, Telophoroi Ascian
The Commander
Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, surveil 1.
At the beginning of your end step, each opponent may sacrifice a nontoken creature of their choice. Each opponent who doesn't loses 2 life for each instant and sorcery card in your graveyard.
Guide
Gameplan
Build a mono-black spellslinger graveyard deck that loads up on cheap instants and sorceries to fill the yard while surveiling for selection. Fandaniel's end step trigger turns every dead spell into a damage clock—either opponents bleed life or sacrifice their best creatures. You win by grinding the table down with recursive removal and incremental life loss while protecting Fandaniel.
Strengths
- Mono-black gives unmatched tutoring, recursion, and life-as-resource consistency
- Punishes opponents either way: forced sacrifices clear blockers or stack life loss
- Surveil 1 on every spell smooths draws and stocks the graveyard for free
- Scales hard in the late game as the spell count balloons toward lethal
Weaknesses
- Trigger only fires on your end step, so it's slow and clogs nothing on opponents' turns
- No protection or evasion built in—Fandaniel dies easily to spot removal
- Mono-black struggles with persistent enchantments and resilient artifacts
- Graveyard hate cripples the entire win plan instantly
Key Cards
- Bolas's Citadel — Casts spells off the top using life, churning the graveyard while Fandaniel converts that into reciprocal life loss.
- Underworld Breach — Recasts instants and sorceries from the yard repeatedly, rebuilding spell count and enabling explosive end-step damage.
- Sign in Blood — Cheap repeatable card draw that triggers surveil and adds an instant/sorcery to the count.
- Demonic Tutor — Finds your wincon or protection while feeding the graveyard for Fandaniel's life-loss math.
- Tergrid, God of Fright — Steals the creatures opponents are forced to sacrifice to Fandaniel's end step trigger.
- Reanimate — A one-mana instant-speed-adjacent spell that exiles cheaply, supports recursion, and pads the graveyard.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Dark Ritual, Jet Medallion) and tutors to assemble Fandaniel plus a payoff faster, and lean into a Bolas's Citadel / Aetherflux Reservoir or Underworld Breach combo for a deterministic kill. Improve protection with Lightning Greaves and Imp's Mischief, and include graveyard insurance like Syr Konrad to convert the same yard into extra damage. Tighten the curve with one- and two-mana cantrips so surveil and spell count ramp consistently every turn.

Win Conditions
- ▸Incremental life loss as the graveyard's instant/sorcery count grows toward lethal each end step
- ▸Forcing repeated sacrifices to strip blockers, then closing with a finisher like Torgaar or Exsanguinate
- ▸Reanimating a large threat and beating down while Fandaniel taxes life
- ▸Drain combos such as Underworld Breach loops feeding mana and spell triggers
Archetypes
- Spellslinger — Every instant and sorcery cast triggers surveil and grows the graveyard that powers Fandaniel's damage.
- Aristocrats — Forced opponent sacrifices pair with edict effects and sac-payoffs to grind boards down.
- Graveyard Value — A big instant/sorcery count is both a resource and a wincon, rewarding flashback and recursion engines.
- Control — Mono-black removal and discard keep the table in check while the end-step clock ticks.
