Fumulus, the Infestation
The Commander
Flying, deathtouch
Whenever a player sacrifices a nontoken creature, create a 1/1 black Insect creature token with flying.
Whenever an Insect, Leech, Slug, or Worm you control attacks, defending player loses 1 life and you gain 1 life.
Guide
Gameplan
Fumulus is a mono-black aristocrats/tokens hybrid that turns your own sacrifice engines into a swarm of flying Insects, then drains the table for life whenever those bugs swing. Early game you build a sacrifice loop and fodder supply; midgame you flood the board with evasive 1/1 fliers and start chipping life totals; late game you go wide with anthems or pump and close with a single alpha strike or repeatable drain.
Strengths
- Doubles up two strong axes—aristocrats sacrifice value and go-wide token aggression—on a single cheap mono-black body
- Flying tokens are evasive, making the attack-trigger drain hard to block and good in the air
- Self-sufficient: any sac outlet that eats nontoken creatures fuels the token engine for free
- Deathtouch flier is a real defensive deterrent and a solid attacker in its own right
- Mono-black gives deep access to tutors, recursion, and card draw to keep fuel flowing
Weaknesses
- Triggers only on nontoken creature sacrifices, so token-fueled sac engines don't make more Insects
- Board wipes are devastating since the strategy commits many small creatures to the field
- No built-in card advantage or ramp—mono-black means weak interaction with artifacts/enchantments
- The drain is only 1 per attacking bug, so it needs real board presence or doublers to matter
- Flying chump-blockers and lifegain hate (e.g., Erebos, Tainted Remedy) blunt the gameplan
Key Cards
- Pitiless Plunderer — Turns every nontoken creature sacrifice into a Treasure, fueling more sacrifices and more Insect tokens.
- Viscera Seer — A free repeatable sac outlet that eats nontoken bodies to crank out Fumulus's flying Insects.
- Phyrexian Reclamation — Recurs sacrificed creatures cheaply, creating loops of sac-fueled token generation.
- Cathars' Crusade — Pumps your entire Insect swarm with every token created, turning chip drain into lethal attacks.
- Coat of Arms — Anthem that scales hard with a wide board of Insects for explosive alpha strikes.
- Bastion of Remembrance — Adds a drain trigger to every creature death, multiplying your aristocrats output alongside Fumulus's tokens.
Upgrade Path
Add aristocrats payoffs like Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, and Bastion of Remembrance so every sacrifice drains regardless of attacks, then layer in free sac outlets (Viscera Seer, Carrion Feeder, Ashnod's Altar). Push the combo angle with persist/undying creatures plus a sac outlet and a death-trigger drainer for a deterministic kill, and include tutors (Demonic Tutor, Diabolic Intent) plus token doublers (Anointed Procession) to assemble engines faster. Round out with board-wipe insurance like Grave Pact effects and recursion to rebuild after sweepers.

Win Conditions
- ▸Going wide with flying Insects buffed by Cathars' Crusade, Coat of Arms, or an overrun effect for a lethal alpha strike
- ▸Incremental drain from Fumulus's attack triggers plus Blood Artist/Bastion of Remembrance effects
- ▸Sacrifice-loop drain combos (e.g., persist creature + sac outlet + aristocrat payoff) to mill the table's life
- ▸Beating down with the evasive deathtouch commander while the swarm chips life
Archetypes
- Aristocrats — Sacrificing nontoken creatures both generates Insect tokens and pairs perfectly with death-payoff engines.
- Tokens / Go-Wide — Fumulus floods the board with flying Insects that drain on attack, rewarding anthems and overrun effects.
- Lifedrain — The attack trigger and aristocrats payoffs build an incremental drain-and-gain clock against the whole table.
- Reanimator — Recursion of sacrificed nontoken creatures creates repeatable token loops and value churn in mono-black.
