Gothmog, Morgul Lieutenant
The Commander
When Gothmog enters, amass Orcs 1. (Put a +1/+1 counter on an Army you control. It's also an Orc. If you don't control an Army, create a 0/0 black Orc Army creature token first.)
Creature tokens you control have deathtouch.
Guide
Gameplan
Flood the board with creature tokens that all gain deathtouch, turning even 1/1s into removal-proof blockers and pingers that trade up. Build a wide army, then close games with anthems, sacrifice payoffs, or a big alpha strike where every token threatens to kill whatever it touches.
Strengths
- Deathtouch on every token makes attacks and blocks brutally efficient, deterring combat and trading up against bombs
- Mono-black gives access to the best tutors, removal, and recursion in the format
- Pairs token swarms with deathtouch to enable safe, value-positive combat and pingers
- Cheap commander that immediately adds a body via amass
Weaknesses
- Board wipes punish a go-wide token strategy hard
- Relies on token generators staying on board; the deathtouch anthem does nothing without bodies
- Single color limits access to flexible interaction and card advantage engines
- Deathtouch is irrelevant against decks that win without combat (combo/storm)
Key Cards
- Ophiomancer — Makes a deathtouch snake every turn that becomes a recurring removal threat and chump blocker.
- Bitterblossom — A relentless token engine that feeds the deathtouch anthem and aristocrat payoffs.
- Pixie Guide — Token generation plus, more importantly, mono-black gives plenty of deathtouch-fueled pingers like this category to leverage.
- Skullclamp — Turns expendable 1/1 tokens into a card-draw machine that refuels your board.
- Goblin Bombardment — Converts deathtouch tokens into reach and removal, sniping creatures or burning out players.
- Bontu's Last Reckoning — You can keep the board clear of rivals while rebuilding tokens faster than opponents.
Upgrade Path
Add fast token engines (Bitterblossom, Ophiomancer, Endrek Sahr) and sacrifice payoffs (Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, Pawn of Ulamog) to build an aristocrats core that profits from board wipes instead of fearing them. Slot in efficient tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) and recursion (Reassembling Skeleton, Sevinne's Reclamation-style effects) to find Skullclamp and your engines consistently. Cap the deck with a hard win like Goblin Bombardment plus a free sac engine, or Cabal Coffers/Nykthos ramp into a swarm overrun.

Win Conditions
- ▸Wide alpha strike where every deathtouch token forces unprofitable blocks
- ▸Aristocrat drain via Blood Artist effects and repeated token sacrifice
- ▸Goblin Bombardment or similar sac outlets converting tokens into direct damage
- ▸Anthem-boosted swarm grinding opponents out over multiple turns
Archetypes
- Tokens / Go-Wide — Gothmog turns any swarm into a wall of deathtouch attackers and blockers.
- Aristocrats — Endless deathtouch tokens are perfect fodder for sacrifice and drain engines.
- Pingers / Control — Deathtouch makes any source of damage to tokens, or any deathtouch fight effect, a removal spell.
- Amass / Orc Tribal — The commander grows an Army on entry and synergizes with other amass and Orc payoffs.
