Kamber, the Plunderer
The Commander
Partner with Laurine, the Diversion (When this creature enters, target player may put Laurine into their hand from their library, then shuffle.)
Whenever a creature an opponent controls dies, you gain 1 life and create a Blood token. (It's an artifact with ",
, Discard a card, Sacrifice this token: Draw a card.")
Guide
Gameplan
Kamber turns opponents' dying creatures into card advantage and life: you force their creatures to die en masse via edicts, board wipes, and combat, banking Blood tokens and life along the way. Early turns develop removal and value engines, then you grind the table down while converting Blood into raw card draw to refuel. You close with reanimation payoffs, drained life totals, or a big finisher off the surplus cards.
Strengths
- Strong card advantage engine that punishes opponents for losing creatures, snowballing in multiplayer pods
- Lifelink plus repeated life gain keeps you out of burn and aggro range
- Mono-black gives access to the best tutors, removal, and reanimation in the format
- Blood tokens enable graveyard synergies and fix bad hands
Weaknesses
- Triggers depend on opponents' creatures dying, so it stalls against go-wide-free or creatureless control decks
- Mono-black struggles to interact with artifacts and enchantments
- Kamber himself is fragile and doesn't directly win the game
- Can be slow to actually close games without a dedicated finisher
Key Cards
- Dictate of Erebos — Forces opponents to sacrifice whenever your creatures die, maximizing Kamber's death triggers.
- Grave Pact — Turns every one of your creature deaths into table-wide sacrifice, feeding Blood and life.
- Black Market Connections — Mono-black card and treasure engine that pairs naturally with the Blood-fueled grind plan.
- Bontu's Last Reckoning — Cheap one-sided-feeling wrath that detonates Kamber triggers across the board.
- Toxic Deluge — Scalable board wipe that kills opponents' creatures and banks a pile of Blood and life.
- Reanimate — Cheap reanimation lets you cash graveyard fuel into a haymaker to actually win.
Upgrade Path
Add the best mono-black tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Imperial Seal) to consistently find your sacrifice engines and finisher. Lean into a tight aristocrats package—Grave Pact, Dictate of Erebos, Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat—plus fast mana like Dark Ritual and a few free wraths to accelerate the death-trigger loop. For a cleaner kill, include a reanimation combo or Exquisite Blood plus a drain payoff to convert your lifegain into a game-ending engine.

- ▸Aristocrat drain effects like Blood Artist and Zulaport Cutthroat finishing the table
- ▸Massive card advantage fueling a deterministic combo or overwhelming board state

Archetypes
- Aristocrats — Pairing sacrifice payoffs like Grave Pact with Kamber's death trigger creates an oppressive drain-and-draw loop.
- Control — Edicts and wraths keep the board clear while Kamber rewards every kill with cards and life.
- Reanimator — Blood tokens and lifegain enable filling the yard, then reanimating fatties as finishers.
- Lifegain Midrange — Lifelink plus repeated gain supports payoffs and out-grinding aggressive decks.
