Niv-Mizzet, Visionary
The Commander
Flying
You have no maximum hand size.
Whenever a source you control deals noncombat damage to an opponent, you draw that many cards.
Guide
Gameplan
Deploy Niv-Mizzet, then weaponize burn spells, pingers, and damage-dealing effects to refill your hand every time you tag an opponent. You snowball card advantage into more spells and bigger burn, eventually slinging enough direct damage (or comboing) to close the game. Early turns build mana and protection; mid-game Niv turns every shock into a card-fueled engine.
Strengths
- Massive, repeatable card advantage that ignores hand-size limits
- Turns cheap burn and pingers into refills, fueling a snowball of value
- Easy access to game-ending damage combos in Izzet colors
- Flying body that can also attack for incremental pressure
Weaknesses
- Six-mana commander that does nothing the turn it lands without follow-up
- Heavily reliant on Niv staying on the board; weak to removal and board wipes
- Triggers only on noncombat damage to opponents—useless against lifegain/fog-heavy tables for racing
- No built-in interaction; Izzet lacks efficient removal and recursion
Key Cards
- Guttersnipe — Every instant or sorcery pings each opponent, drawing cards off Niv while chipping life totals.
- Curiosity — Combos with any source of repeatable damage to draw your entire deck via Niv's trigger.
- Walking Ballista — Pays mana to deal precise damage, refunding cards through Niv and enabling lethal pings.
- Fiery Emancipation — Triples noncombat damage, so even a 1-damage ping draws three cards and burns harder.
- Dragon's Approach — A dedicated burn payoff that deals huge chunks and refills your hand massively with Niv out.
- Thousand-Year Storm — Copies your burn spells repeatedly, multiplying both damage and Niv's draw triggers.
Upgrade Path
Add damage multipliers like Torbran, Thane of Red Fell and Fiery Emancipation to make every ping draw more and hit harder, and include tutors (Mystical Tutor, Gamble) to assemble combos. Tighten the mana with fast rocks (Sol Ring, Arcane Signet) and protect Niv with counterspells and Soul-Guide Lantern-style hexproof effects. The highest-power builds run a Curiosity + Walking Ballista or Niv + Cursed Mirror loop to win the turn Niv resolves.

Win Conditions
- ▸Infinite or massive draw plus damage loops (Niv + Curiosity-style aura + repeatable pinger)
- ▸Big burn spells like Dragon's Approach or doubled Fireballs to the face
- ▸Beating down with the 5/5 flyer while card advantage overwhelms the table
- ▸Storm-style finishes via Thousand-Year Storm copying lethal burn
Archetypes
- Spellslinger — Niv rewards casting instants and sorceries that deal damage by drawing cards for every point.
- Burn — Direct-damage spells double as card advantage, letting you grind and finish through life totals.
- Combo — Pairs damage sources with cantrip auras or damage doublers for infinite or near-infinite loops.
- Control — The endless card flow supports a counterspell-and-removal shell that buries opponents in resources.
