Rankle, Master of Pranks
The Commander
Flying, haste
Whenever Rankle deals combat damage to a player, choose any number —
• Each player discards a card.
• Each player loses 1 life and draws a card.
• Each player sacrifices a creature of their choice.
Guide
Gameplan
Rankle is a mono-black aggro-tempo commander that wants to connect early thanks to flying and haste, then abuse its triggered modes to grind everyone out of resources. You apply pressure, discard their hands, force sacrifices, and refill yourself while symmetrically punishing opponents who can't capitalize. The deck wins by leveraging asymmetric payoffs—aristocrats, hand attack, and reanimation—until you out-resource the table.
Strengths
- Flying + haste means Rankle connects and triggers immediately, often the turn it lands
- Modular triggers let you tailor disruption (discard, draw, sac) to each board state
- Mono-black gives access to the best tutors, ramp, and recursion in the game
- Synergizes powerfully with sacrifice payoffs and 'punisher' effects that break symmetry
Weaknesses
- Symmetrical effects can help opponents if you lack engines to capitalize
- A 3/3 body dies to nearly any removal or blocker, halting the engine
- Mono-black struggles with enchantments and noncreature permanents
- Reliant on commander combat damage, so evasion-hate or fog/pillowfort slows you down
Key Cards
- Necropotence — Converts Rankle's life-loss mode and your own life total into a massive card-advantage engine.
- Sheoldred, the Apocalypse — Turns Rankle's draw mode into a one-sided life swing while punishing opponents' draws.
- Bolas's Citadel — Plays off the top of your library, weaponizing the life-loss/draw symmetry in your favor.
- Dauthi Voidwalker — Unblockable evasive threat and graveyard hate that loves a sacrifice-heavy table.
- Liliana, Dreadhorde General — Generates fodder and draws off your own sacrifices, breaking Rankle's sac mode symmetry.
- Whip of Erebos — Lifelink keeps you ahead of the life-loss symmetry and enables reanimation value.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Dark Ritual, Mana Vault, Jet Medallion) to deploy Rankle ahead of curve and protect him with cheap interaction like Imp's Mischief and Malakir Rebirth. Lean into asymmetry with one-sided payoffs (Sheoldred, Bolas's Citadel, Bontu's Last Reckoning) so symmetrical modes only hurt opponents. Tighten the curve and add efficient tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Grim Tutor) plus recursion to ensure Rankle stays a recurring threat.

Win Conditions
- ▸Aristocrats drain via Blood Artist/Zulaport Cutthroat off forced sacrifices
- ▸Commander damage and evasive beatdown chaining Rankle's triggers
- ▸Resource denial mill/discard leaving opponents topdecking while you grind them out
- ▸Reanimated bombs (Sheoldred, Archon, etc.) closing the game
Archetypes
- Aristocrats — Rankle's forced sacrifices pair with death-payoff engines like Blood Artist to drain the table.
- Hand Attack/Discard — The discard mode plus mono-black hand disruption strips opponents of answers and threats.
- Reanimator — Discard mode and self-mill enable cheating big threats back from the graveyard.
- Voltron/Tempo — Evasive haste body can be pumped and protected to deal commander damage and chain triggers.
