Sheoldred // The True Scriptures
The Commander
Menace
When Sheoldred enters, each opponent sacrifices a nontoken creature or planeswalker of their choice.
: Exile Sheoldred, then return it to the battlefield transformed under its owner's control. Activate only as a sorcery and only if an opponent has eight or more cards in their graveyard.
(As this Saga enters and after your draw step, add a lore counter.)
I — For each opponent, destroy up to one target creature or planeswalker that player controls.
II — Each opponent discards three cards, then mills three cards.
III — Put all creature cards from all graveyards onto the battlefield under your control. Exile this Saga, then return it to the battlefield (front face up).
Guide
Gameplan
Mono-black midrange/reanimator that grinds opponents out with relentless attrition: Sheoldred forces sacrifices on entry, then flips into a Saga that wraths, makes everyone discard and mill, and finally steals every creature in all graveyards. You fuel graveyards with mill and discard, then flip Sheoldred to assemble a massive board and beat down or close with a finisher.
Strengths
- Repeatable removal and edict effects from both the creature ETB and Saga chapter I
- Mass reanimation of ALL graveyards on chapter III generates huge tempo and a wide board
- Mono-black gives access to elite tutors, ramp, and recursion for consistency
- The Saga exiles and returns itself, so the front-face Sheoldred re-triggers its edict ETB on repeat
Weaknesses
- Flip is gated behind opponents having 8+ cards in graveyard, so graveyard hate can lock you out
- Five mana plus four to flip is mana-intensive and slow into fast combo decks
- Relies on opponents having good creatures in graveyards for chapter III to pay off
- Vulnerable to board wipes resetting your stolen army and to commander tax after removal
Key Cards
- Bolas's Citadel — Converts your high life total into explosive card advantage and lets you dump your hand into the board.
- Animate Dead — Cheap reanimation that lets you cheat Sheoldred or stolen threats back without paying full cost.
- Bojuka Bog — Note opponents need full graveyards to flip, so you want to fuel rather than exile their yards—mill effects matter more here.
- Crypt Ghast — Doubles your Swamp mana to comfortably afford casting plus the four-mana flip in one turn.
- Liliana, Dreadhorde General — Provides card draw, edicts, and sacrifice synergy that mirrors Sheoldred's attrition plan.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Dark Ritual, Jet Medallion) and ramp to flip Sheoldred earlier and more often. Lean into mill enablers and reanimation targets so chapter III steals game-ending creatures, and include protection like Imp's Mischief or Malakir Rebirth to defend her. Top-end tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) and a compact combo such as Mikaeus plus a sac outlet push the deck toward cEDH-adjacent power.

Win Conditions
- ▸Beat down with a wide board of reanimated creatures after chapter III
- ▸Grind every opponent out of resources via repeated edicts, discard, and mill
- ▸Leverage a Bolas's Citadel or aristocrats engine into a drain/combo finish
Archetypes
- Reanimator — Chapter III mass-reanimates every creature in all graveyards, rewarding a deck that fills graveyards with mill and discard.
- Aristocrats — The repeated edicts and sacrifice triggers pair with sac outlets and death payoffs for grindy value.
- Control — Edicts, board wipes from chapter I, and discard let Sheoldred dismantle the table piece by piece.
- Mill — Filling opponents' graveyards both enables the flip and supercharges your eventual mass reanimation.
