Tourach, Dread Cantor
The Commander
Kicker (You may pay an additional
as you cast this spell.)
Protection from white
Whenever an opponent discards a card, put a +1/+1 counter on Tourach.
When Tourach enters, if it was kicked, target opponent discards two cards at random.
Guide
Gameplan
Tourach is a cheap, evasive (protection from white) beater that grows whenever opponents discard cards. You build a mono-black discard/hand-attack deck that strips opponents' hands while pumping Tourach into a fast clock. Cast it early, kick it for value when you can, and turn discard density into both disruption and damage.
Strengths
- Comes down turn 2 (or turn 4 kicked) and grows itself for free via any discard
- Protection from white dodges most premier removal and blockers in a heavy-white meta
- Mono-black gives access to the best tutors, ramp, and recursion
- Discard theme doubles as disruption against combo and value decks
Weaknesses
- Mono-black struggles with enchantments and resilient artifacts
- Hand disruption scales poorly in multiplayer—stripping one hand leaves three opponents
- Tourach is small without discard support and dies to non-white spot removal
- Relies on commander damage/single attacker, so a single board wipe or chump line slows it
Key Cards
- Megrim — Each discarded card deals 2 damage, turning your discard engine into a direct kill condition.
- Liliana's Caress — Stacks with other discard payoffs to punish every card opponents pitch.
- Bottomless Pit — Forces continuous random discard each turn, steadily feeding Tourach's counters and your payoffs.
- Dauthi Voidwalker — Unblockable evasion and a powerful steal effect that complements an aggressive black beatdown plan.
- Necropotence — Refills your hand to keep the discard/disruption engine running in a card-hungry deck.
- Whip of Erebos — Lifelink keeps you alive while Tourach swings and offers recursion for your threats.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Dark Ritual, Jeweled Lotus) and efficient tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to assemble discard payoffs quickly. Lean into wheel effects (Windfall, Bottomless Pit, Geier Reach Sanitarium) to maximize discard triggers, and run protection like Lightning Greaves and Swiftfoot Boots to keep Tourach alive. To push higher, pair the discard package with a backup combo such as Dross Harvester loops or Bolas's Citadel value for resilience.

Win Conditions
- ▸Commander damage from an evasive, ever-growing Tourach
- ▸Discard payoffs like Megrim and Liliana's Caress burning opponents out
- ▸Grinding hands to zero then closing with recurring black threats
Archetypes
- Discard / Hand Attack — Tourach grows from every opponent discard and kicks to strip two cards, making symmetrical and targeted discard your core engine.
- Aggro / Voltron — Protection from white plus self-pumping counters make Tourach a hard-to-block commander-damage clock.
- Mono-Black Midrange Control — Black's removal and discard let you grind opponents out while Tourach pressures life totals.
