Urza, Chief Artificer
The Commander
Affinity for artifact creatures (This spell costs less to cast for each artifact creature you control.)
Artifact creatures you control have menace.
At the beginning of your end step, create a 0/0 colorless Construct artifact creature token with "This token gets +1/+1 for each artifact you control."
Guide
Gameplan
Flood the board with cheap and free artifacts, beat down with an evasive artifact creature army that all has menace, and grind out advantage with a free Construct token every turn that grows with your artifact count. You curve out on mana rocks and cheap artifact creatures, cast Urza for a discount via affinity, then go wide and tall simultaneously until your Constructs and menace creatures end the game.
Strengths
- Built-in token engine that scales with your artifact count, providing a recurring evasive threat every turn
- Affinity makes Urza cheap and rewards a low artifact-creature curve
- Menace on your whole board makes blocking miserable and pushes consistent combat damage
- Deep card pool—Esper artifacts have endless support and tutors
- Goes wide and tall at once, enabling Anthem-style payoffs and overrun finishers
Weaknesses
- Extremely vulnerable to board wipes and mass artifact destruction (Vandalblast, Bane of Progress)
- Construct tokens are 0/0 base—lose all artifacts and your board evaporates
- Token gets +1/+1 only for artifacts YOU control, so it's a wrath magnet
- Reliant on having Urza or a wide board to apply pressure; slow without setup
- Can struggle to interact with combo decks racing on a faster axis
Key Cards
- Sol Ring — Ramp that also feeds affinity and pumps your Construct token.
- Cranial Plating — Turns any single artifact creature into a one-shot kill given your high artifact count, and menace makes it unblockable.
- Skullclamp — Draws absurd cards off your endlessly produced 0/0-base tokens and other small artifact creatures.
- Ornithopter — Free artifact creature that immediately reduces Urza's cost via affinity and adds an evasive body.
- Master of Etherium — Anthem that scales your whole board with your artifact count, perfect alongside the Construct token.
- Steel Overseer — Snowballs your entire artifact creature army into a lethal force over a couple turns.
- Sword of the Animist — Repeatable ramp and equipment value that, with menace, connects reliably.
- Darksteel Forge — Protects your entire artifact board from removal, making your engine resilient.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and free artifacts (Mox Opal, Mishra's Bauble, Springleaf Drum) to maximize affinity and Construct size, plus tutors like Whir of Invention and Tezzeret the Seeker to assemble payoffs. Lean into a sacrifice subtheme with Disciple of the Vault and Marionette Master so your tokens close games even through wraths. Top-end protection (Darksteel Forge, Teferi's Protection) and a compact combo line like Thopter Foundry + Sword of the Meek + Krark-Clan Ironworks push the deck to high power.

- Aristocrats — A steady stream of free Construct tokens fuels sacrifice engines like Skullclamp, Marionette Master, and Disciple of the Vault.
- Combo — Esper colors and the artifact density support infinite loops with cards like Time Sieve and engines that drain on artifact triggers.
