Vraan, Executioner Thane
The Commander
Whenever one or more other creatures you control die, each opponent loses 2 life and you gain 2 life. This ability triggers only once each turn.
Guide
Gameplan
Vraan turns every creature death into a 2-point life swing, so you build a wide, expendable board and sacrifice or trade creatures every turn to drain the table. Because the trigger only fires once per turn, you want consistent death across turns rather than one big blowout, while leaning on token generators and sac outlets to manufacture deaths on demand. You grind opponents out with repeatable drain while staying healthy at a mono-black price of card advantage.
Strengths
- Cheap two-mana commander that comes down early and pressures all opponents at once
- Symmetric drain plus lifegain makes you very resilient against aggro and racing
- Mono-black gives access to elite tutors, ramp, and recursion for consistency
- Synergizes effortlessly with the deep aristocrats package already in black
Weaknesses
- Once-per-turn cap limits explosive damage and slows the clock
- Mono-color means no access to white or red aristocrats staples and weaker interaction
- Removal of Vraan shuts off the engine entirely until recast
- Can struggle to close games without a dedicated combo or finisher
Key Cards
- Blood Artist — Stacks additional per-death drain that ignores Vraan's once-per-turn limit, multiplying every sacrifice.
- Zulaport Cutthroat — Another uncapped death-drain that turns wide board wipes into lethal life swings.
- Viscera Seer — Free sacrifice outlet that guarantees a creature dies every turn to fire Vraan.
- Pitiless Plunderer — Generates Treasure on each death, fueling repeated sacrifices and combos.
- Bastion of Remembrance — Enchantment-based aristocrat drain that survives creature wipes and adds redundancy.
- Gravecrawler — Recurs from the graveyard for endless sacrifice fodder with a Zombie outlet.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and tutors like Dark Ritual, Demonic Tutor, and Vampiric Tutor to assemble engines faster, plus more uncapped drainers (Cruel Celebrant analog via Bastion, Falkenrath Noble). Build toward a compact infinite combo such as Gravecrawler + Phyrexian Altar + a Blood Artist effect, then back it with reanimation (Reanimate, Animate Dead) and disruption (Bolas's Citadel, Necropotence) to grind harder and protect Vraan with Swiftfoot Boots or Lightning Greaves.

Win Conditions
- ▸Incremental drain from Vraan plus Blood Artist effects across many turns
- ▸Infinite sacrifice loops (e.g., Gravecrawler/Phyrexian Altar or persist combos) with a death-drain payoff
- ▸A mass sacrifice spell like Plunge into Darkness or a board wipe stacking all the drain triggers at once
- ▸Beating down with recurring evasive threats while opponents bleed out
Archetypes
- Aristocrats — Vraan rewards a steady stream of creature deaths through sac outlets and drain payoffs.
- Tokens — Wide token production provides cheap, recurring fodder to feed Vraan and trigger drain each turn.
- Combo — Mono-black supports persist/Reassembling-style loops with sac outlets and Blood Artist effects for infinite drain.
- Reanimator — Recurring big creatures and sacrificing them repeatedly leverages both deaths and value.
