Whisper, Blood Liturgist
The Commander
, Sacrifice two creatures: Return target creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield.
Guide
Gameplan
Whisper is a mono-black reanimator engine: dump huge creatures into your graveyard, then tap her while sacrificing two fodder bodies to cheat them onto the battlefield. You spend the early game ramping, filling the yard, and generating expendable creatures, then convert that material into game-ending threats every turn.
Strengths
- Repeatable, mana-free reanimation that dodges counterspells once she's on the board
- Mono-black gives access to the format's best tutors and recursion
- Synergizes with sacrifice payoffs, making the two-creature cost a feature rather than a drawback
- Can rebuy commanders and value creatures all game without spending mana
Weaknesses
- Summoning sick the turn she enters and easy to remove before she activates
- Requires both fuel (two creatures) and a stocked graveyard, so she's clunky in a vacuum
- Heavily exposed to graveyard hate which neuters the whole plan
- Mono-color means no access to blue protection or green ramp diversity
Key Cards
- Pitiless Plunderer — Turns every sacrificed creature into Treasure, fueling more plays and offsetting the body cost.
- Bloodghast — Recurs itself from the graveyard, providing endless free sacrifice fodder for Whisper's ability.
- Buried Alive — Instantly loads your graveyard with the exact fatties you want Whisper to reanimate.
- Razaketh, the Foulblooded — A premier reanimation target that tutors any card by sacrificing the fodder you already have.
- Phyrexian Altar — Provides free sacrifice outlets and mana, smoothing the cost of activating Whisper.
- Victimize — A backup reanimation effect that also turns one body into two big threats.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Dark Ritual, Mana Vault, Ancient Tomb) and protection like Lightning Greaves so Whisper survives to activate the turn she lands. Layer in efficient tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Diabolic Intent) and self-mill/discard enablers (Entomb, Stitcher's Supplier) to assemble graveyard targets faster. Top-end can shift toward an aristocrats combo finish with Blood Artist effects and free sacrifice outlets for deterministic kills.

Win Conditions
- ▸Reanimating a stable of beaters or a finisher like Sheoldred or Razaketh to grind out the table
- ▸Aristocrat drain loops with Blood Artist and Zulaport Cutthroat as you sacrifice fodder
- ▸Infinite recursion combos (Karmic Guide + Reveillark + sac outlet) into a damage payoff
Archetypes
- Reanimator — Her entire ability is built around cheating large creatures from the graveyard onto the battlefield for free.
- Aristocrats — Sacrificing two creatures per activation pairs perfectly with death-trigger payoffs and blood-tax effects.
- Combo — Loops with creatures like Karmic Guide and Reveillark plus a sac outlet can generate infinite recursion or drain.
