Zodiark, Umbral God
The Commander
Indestructible
When Zodiark enters, each player sacrifices half the non-God creatures they control of their choice, rounded down.
Whenever a player sacrifices another creature, put a +1/+1 counter on Zodiark.
Guide
Gameplan
Zodiark is a mono-black aristocrats engine that grows huge off every sacrifice while you grind the table out with death triggers. You build a wide board of expendable creatures, then sacrifice them repeatedly for value, draining life and ballooning Zodiark into a fast, indestructible clock. The ETB edict on each player can also be a brutal opening salvo against go-wide and reanimator decks.
Strengths
- Indestructible body that can't be killed by burn, combat, or most board wipes
- Free, repeatable +1/+1 counters from any sacrifice make it a real Voltron threat
- Symmetrical-but-favorable ETB edict punishes go-wide and creature-heavy tables
- Mono-black gives deep access to tutors, recursion, and ramp consistency
- Aristocrats synergy is enormous since you're already sacrificing creatures for value
Weaknesses
- Counters and growth do nothing against exile, bounce, and -X/-X effects
- No built-in evasion, so a fattened Zodiark gets chump-blocked or removed by edicts/sacrifice on you
- Mono-color means weak interaction against artifacts/enchantments and no instant-speed flexibility outside black
- The ETB edict can backfire by thinning your own board if you over-rely on it
- Relies on having fodder and sac outlets in play to actually generate value
Key Cards
- Pitiless Plunderer — Turns every creature death into Treasure, fueling explosive sacrifice loops and ramp.
- Blood Artist — Converts your endless sacrifices into table-wide drain, a primary win path.
- Ashnod's Altar — Free sacrifice outlet that ramps and pumps Zodiark with every fodder creature.
- Bastion of Remembrance — Non-creature drain effect that survives wipes and rewards your aristocrats engine.
- Pawn of Ulamog — Generates Eldrazi Spawn fodder whenever creatures die, feeding the sacrifice loop.
- Skullclamp — Premier card advantage engine that turns small fodder into a refilled hand.
- Lightning Greaves — Gives the often-exposed Zodiark haste and shroud to protect your evasionless beater.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Dark Ritual, Jet Medallion) and efficient tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to assemble engines faster. Lean into a dedicated combo line such as Gravecrawler plus a free sac outlet plus a Treasure-maker, paired with a drain payoff, to convert the deck into a true two-card kill machine. Finally, prioritize evasion or protection for Zodiark itself—Whispersilk Cloak or recursion like Reassembling Skeleton—so your sacrifices never run dry.

Win Conditions

- ▸Grind opponents out of creatures and resources, then close with attrition
Archetypes
- Aristocrats — Every sacrifice grows Zodiark and triggers drain payoffs, making it the natural shell.
- Voltron — Indestructible plus snowballing counters lets Zodiark close games via commander damage.
- Sacrifice/Combo — Sac outlets, token generators, and drain effects assemble looping life-loss kills.
- Reanimator — Mono-black recursion repeatedly returns fodder and value creatures to feed the engine.
