What it does

Channel lets you discard a card with the ability for a one-time effect, paying its channel cost. You're not casting the card—you're activating an ability from your hand, so the card goes to the graveyard and the effect happens without ever being on the stack as a spell. The most common mistake: because it's an activated ability and not a spell, channel abilities can't be countered by spells like Counterspell (only by things that counter abilities, like Stifle or Tale's End). They also don't trigger "when you cast" effects, and they ignore the card's actual type—channeling a creature won't trigger creature-cast triggers. In Commander, channel cards (especially the Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty lands and dragons) shine as flexible answers. A removal land like Otawara or Boseiju gives you a "free" effect when you don't need the land, smoothing out mana while keeping interaction available.
