What it does
"Double" isn't a single keyword but appears across many effects that multiply a quantity—doubling damage, life, tokens, +1/+1 counters, mana, or your life total. The card's text tells you exactly what gets doubled, so always read the specific instruction rather than assuming.
The most common mistake is misunderstanding when doubling happens. Effects like "double the power" set the value once and don't keep recalculating, while replacement effects (like Doubling Season or Doubling Cube) apply as the event occurs. Doubling Season, for example, doubles tokens created and counters placed—it doesn't double counters already present, and it won't double counters from your commander's death triggers if no counters are being placed. It also famously lets planeswalkers ultimate immediately by doubling starting loyalty.
In Commander, doublers are explosive engines—token, counter, and mana doublers stack multiplicatively, turning incremental strategies into game-ending swings.
