What it does

Fortify is an activated ability found only on Fortifications—a special subtype of Land. It lets you attach the Fortification to a land you control by paying its fortify cost, much like equipping an Equipment to a creature. Once attached, the Fortification grants its bonus to that land (for example, the original card Darksteel Garrison makes a land indestructible and adds a counter). The big nuance: fortify can only target lands, never creatures, and you can only activate it at sorcery speed (your main phase, with an empty stack). If the land it's attached to leaves play, the Fortification simply becomes unattached and stays on the battlefield—it isn't sacrificed or destroyed. In Commander, Fortify is essentially a novelty. Darksteel Garrison is the only Fortification ever printed, so you'll rarely encounter it outside of trivia or pet janky decks.
