Aerith Gainsborough
The Commander
Whenever you gain life, put a +1/+1 counter on Aerith Gainsborough.
When Aerith Gainsborough dies, put X +1/+1 counters on each legendary creature you control, where X is the number of +1/+1 counters on Aerith Gainsborough.
Guide
Gameplan
Aerith grows herself by gaining life every turn, then turns into a payoff when she dies by dumping all her +1/+1 counters across your other legendary creatures. You build a mono-white go-wide-on-legends or lifegain board, protect or sacrifice Aerith on your terms, and win through oversized lifelinking attackers or a legendary swarm.
Strengths
- Lifelink plus the gain-life trigger makes Aerith a self-growing threat with built-in life buffer
- Mono-white keeps the manabase clean and gives access to the best lifegain and counter-doubling enablers
- Death trigger rewards a legendary-heavy board, turning one removal spell into a board-wide buff
- Lifegain synergies are deep in white, so the engine is easy to assemble
Weaknesses
- Effectively a one-shot payoff: once Aerith dies and distributes counters she's gone
- Slow and grindy with little interaction or card advantage native to mono-white
- Heavily reliant on having other legendary creatures out to make the death trigger worthwhile
- Vulnerable to exile, -X/-X, and counter removal that sidesteps the death trigger
- Lifegain alone doesn't close games without a payoff
Key Cards
- Hardened Scales — Multiplies every counter Aerith gains, ballooning her death-trigger payout.
- Doubling Season — Doubles the counters from lifegain and the death distribution for explosive boards.
- Soul Warden — Triggers passive lifegain to grow Aerith every time a creature enters.
- Heliod, Sun-Crowned — Adds a counter on lifegain and gives Aerith built-in scaling and protection synergy.
- Felidar Sovereign — A lifegain payoff that can outright win the game at 40+ life.
- Skullclamp — Lets you sacrifice Aerith on command to fire the death trigger while drawing cards.
Upgrade Path
Lean into counter doublers (Hardened Scales, Doubling Season, Branching Evolution) and proliferate to maximize the death payout, and add ways to sacrifice or recur Aerith on demand like Skullclamp, Goldnight Redeemer effects, and reanimation. Tighten the curve with efficient lifegain engines (Soul Warden, Heliod, Sun-Crowned, Archangel of Thune) and add white interaction (Swords to Plowshares, Path to Exile) plus a dedicated payoff such as Felidar Sovereign or Approach of the Second Sun to actually close.
