Ardenn, Intrepid Archaeologist
The Commander
At the beginning of combat on your turn, you may attach any number of Auras and Equipment you control to target permanent or player.
Partner (You can have two commanders if both have partner.)
Guide
Gameplan
Ardenn flings every Aura and Equipment you control onto a chosen permanent or player for free at the start of combat, letting you sidestep equip costs entirely. You ramp into a pile of cheap-to-cast, expensive-to-equip gear, then move it around each turn to set up lethal Voltron swings, steal opponents' creatures with control Auras, or generate value. As a 3-mana partner commander she pairs with another legend to fill out the second half of your color identity and gameplan.
Strengths
- Free equip and aura attachment bypasses high equip costs every combat
- Flexible: can suit up any creature, even a token or a freshly cast threat
- Partner slot lets you splash a second color and a second wincon
- Can attach control-stealing Auras (Confiscate effects) to hijack opponents' best creatures
- Cheap to recast at 3 mana if she dies
Weaknesses
- Mono-white card draw and ramp are limited unless your partner covers it
- Relies on having Auras/Equipment in play, so a slow start leaves her doing nothing
- Vulnerable to board wipes and equipment/aura hate that two-for-one your investment
- Aura-heavy builds risk card disadvantage to spot removal
- Only moves gear at combat, so no instant-speed flexibility on others' turns
Key Cards
- Colossus Hammer — Its prohibitive equip cost is irrelevant with Ardenn, turning any creature into a +10/+10 one-shot kill.
- Lightning Greaves — Free haste and shroud you can shuffle between threats every combat to protect your attacker.
- Sword of Feast and Famine — Untaps your lands on combat damage and provides protection, snowballing your mana while you carry it around.
- Confiscate — Ardenn attaches it for free to steal an opponent's biggest creature, then can relocate it to a new target later.
- Sigarda's Aid — Lets you flash in Auras and Equipment and attach Equipment for free, doubling down on Ardenn's combat trick.
- Steelshaper's Gift — Tutors any Equipment in mono-white to find your Hammer, Sword, or key piece.
Upgrade Path
Pick a partner that shores up white's weaknesses—Tymna the Weaver for card draw or Akiri/Bruse Tarl for aggression and a second color. Add protection (Swiftfoot Boots, Whispersilk Cloak), fast mana (Sol Ring, mana rocks), and tutors (Stoneforge Mystic, Open the Armory) to assemble your kill pieces faster. Lean into one-shot lines with Colossus Hammer plus unblockable or trample enablers, and run resilience like Teferi's Protection and Heroic Intervention to survive wipes.
