Ashcoat of the Shadow Swarm
The Commander
Whenever Ashcoat attacks or blocks, other Rats you control get +X/+X until end of turn, where X is the number of Rats you control.
At the beginning of your end step, you may mill four cards. If you do, return up to two Rat creature cards from your graveyard to your hand. (To mill a card, put the top card of your library into your graveyard.)
Guide
Gameplan
Flood the board with cheap Rats, then swing wide with an anthem that scales off your own creature count for explosive, often-lethal alpha strikes. Ashcoat's end-step mill+return engine keeps your hand stocked with the best Rats from the graveyard, so you grind out card advantage while rebuilding after board wipes.
Strengths
- Recursive card advantage that makes board wipes far less punishing
- Anthem effect scales hard in go-wide token strategies, enabling one-shot kills
- Mono-black gives access to premium ramp, tutors, and removal
- Self-mill synergizes with reanimation and graveyard payoffs
Weaknesses
- Relies on Ashcoat connecting in combat, so removal or chump blocks blunt the payoff
- Vulnerable to board wipes that hit before you've rebuilt
- Mono-color means no interaction with countermagic or flexible removal beyond black's tools
- Self-mill can deck you out in very long games and exiles graveyard hate hurts the engine
Key Cards
- Marrow-Gnawer — Sacrifices a Rat to make a token army equal to your Rat count, instantly powering Ashcoat's anthem to lethal.
- Pack Rat — A repeatable token-and-discard engine that grows your board and the anthem each activation.
- Swarm of Rats — A Rat whose power scales with the swarm, reinforcing the go-wide plan.
- Relentless Rats — Lets you run unlimited copies that buff each other and flood the field cheaply.
- Coat of Arms — Stacks with Ashcoat's anthem to make even a modest Rat board overwhelming.
- Cabal Coffers — Black ramp that fuels mass token production and reanimation.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and tutors like Dark Ritual, Demonic Tutor, and Vampiric Tutor to assemble Marrow-Gnawer plus an anthem faster. Lean into payoffs such as Skullclamp for card draw off tokens, Cabal Stronghold/Nykthos for explosive mana, and Living Death or Reanimate to exploit the self-mill. Tighten the curve with cheap protection (Heroic Intervention's black analog, Malakir Rebirth) and a Craterhoof-style finisher like Overwhelming Stampede to convert wide boards into immediate wins.

- Tokens — The anthem scales with creature count, rewarding Marrow-Gnawer and Pack Rat token swarms.
- Aristocrats — Sacrificing Rats with Marrow-Gnawer pairs with drain effects, and Ashcoat recurs the fodder.
