Balan, Wandering Knight
The Commander
First strike
Balan has double strike as long as two or more Equipment are attached to it.
: Attach all Equipment you control to Balan.
Guide
Gameplan
Balan is a mono-white Voltron commander that suits up with Equipment and beats face. You ramp into your gear early, then use Balan's ability to mass-attach every Equipment at once, granting double strike with two or more attached for explosive commander-damage kills. Each turn you protect Balan, swing, and threaten to one-shot a player with general damage.
Strengths
- Extremely cheap, repeatable mass-equip ability lets you reattach gear in one activation after a board wipe or blink
- Double strike doubles all Equipment bonuses (including damage triggers and lifelink), making 21 commander damage trivial
- Mono-white is consistent and gives access to the best protection, recursion, and Stoneforge-style tutors
- Can win out of nowhere as early as turn 4-5 with the right curve
Weaknesses
- Classic Voltron fragility — heavy reliance on the commander means removal, edicts, and chump-blocking set you back hard
- Mono-white lacks card draw and ramp compared to other colors, leading to grind issues
- Vulnerable to fogs, damage prevention, and 'can't be blocked by more than one creature' is needed against go-wide decks
- Putting all eggs in one basket invites focus from the whole table
Key Cards
- Sword of Feast and Famine — Pro green/black plus untapping all lands lets Balan attack and recast threats; one of many Swords that shine with double strike.
- Stoneforge Mystic — Tutors your best Equipment to the battlefield cheaply, accelerating the Voltron plan.
- Swiftfoot Boots — Cheap hexproof/haste that also counts toward enabling double strike while protecting Balan.
- Puresteel Paladin — Free Equipment attach with metalcraft and card draw makes Balan's gear-heavy build hum.
- Sigarda's Aid — Flash in Equipment and attach for free at instant speed, ambushing blockers and dodging sorcery-speed removal.
- Colossus Hammer — With free-equip enablers it turns Balan into a +10/+10 trampling double-strike threat for one-shot kills.
Upgrade Path
Lean into free-attach enablers (Sigarda's Aid, Puresteel Paladin, Leonin Shikari) and protection (Lightning Greaves, Hammer of Nazahn, Robe of Stars) so a single removal spell doesn't end your turn. Add the full Sword cycle, top-tier mono-white ramp (Sol Ring, Smothering Tithe, mana rocks), and tutors like Stoneforge Mystic and Open the Armory for consistency. Round out with recursion (Hall of Heliod's Generosity, Sword of Hearth and Home) and evasion to make Balan's swings unstoppable and resilient.

Archetypes
- Voltron — Balan's whole identity is stacking Equipment to deal lethal commander damage through double strike.
- Equipment Aggro — The mass-attach ability rewards a critical mass of cheap, value-laden Equipment.
- Hatebears/Stax — Mono-white can pair Equipment beats with taxing pieces like Thalia and Smothering Tithe to slow opponents while you set up a kill.
