Baron Bertram Graywater
The Commander
Whenever one or more tokens you control enter, create a 1/1 black Vampire Rogue creature token with lifelink. This ability triggers only once each turn.
, Sacrifice another creature or artifact: Draw a card.
Guide
Gameplan
Flood the board with tokens to trigger Baron's once-per-turn Vampire Rogue, then convert that wide board into card advantage and life swings via his sacrifice-to-draw ability. You play a token aristocrats midrange game, generating value every turn while grinding opponents out with lifelink, drain, and sacrifice payoffs. Close games by going wide with anthems or looping sacrifice fodder into drain effects.
Strengths
- Built-in card advantage engine that turns any creature or artifact into cards
- Lifelink tokens keep you safe against aggro while fueling lifegain payoffs
- Token-matters synergy is extremely broad in WB, so the deck is easy to build
- Sacrifice outlet on the command zone makes it resilient and recurring
- Great at grinding value in long games against attrition decks
Weaknesses
- Slow without a token generator already in play—Baron does nothing alone
- Sac ability costs mana each activation, capping card draw speed
- Vulnerable to board wipes that erase your token engine and fodder
- Lacks fast combo potential, so cEDH tables outpace it
- Needs both a token maker and an aristocrats payoff to truly hum
Key Cards
- Bitterblossom — Makes a token every upkeep, reliably firing Baron's trigger for a free lifelink Vampire each turn.
- Blood Artist — Turns your steady stream of sacrificed tokens into incremental drain across the whole table.
- Zulaport Cutthroat — A second drain payoff that punishes opponents for every creature you sacrifice to Baron.
- Skullclamp — Equipping a 1/1 token draws two cards on death, an absurd engine with infinite fodder.
- Anointed Procession — Doubles every token, supercharging both the board and Baron's lifelink generation.
- Pitiless Plunderer — Each sacrificed creature makes a Treasure, paying for repeated Baron activations and ramping you out.
Upgrade Path
Add efficient token engines (Bitterblossom, Ophiomancer, Mardu Ascendancy) and multiple drain payoffs (Blood Artist, Bastion of Remembrance, Cruel Celebrant) so every sacrifice closes the gap. Lean into recursion with Gravecrawler, Reassembling Skeleton, and Pitiless Plunderer for self-sustaining loops, and tighten the mana with fast rocks and tutors like Vampiric Tutor. For a true combo finish, include Gravecrawler + Phyrexian Altar with a drain payoff to win on the spot.

Win Conditions
- ▸Drain the table with Blood Artist effects as you sacrifice tokens en masse
- ▸Go wide and swing with anthem effects like Intangible Virtue or Cathars' Crusade
- ▸Assemble a sacrifice loop (e.g., Gravecrawler + outlet + drain) for incremental kills
- ▸Grind opponents into topdeck mode with relentless card advantage, then close with a big board
Archetypes
- Aristocrats — Baron is a free sacrifice outlet plus card draw, the heart of any death-trigger drain strategy.
- Tokens — Every token you make triggers a lifelink Vampire, making go-wide plans snowball.
- Lifegain — Lifelink tokens and drain payoffs feed life-matters cards while keeping you out of burn range.
- Reanimator — WB can sacrifice big creatures to Baron for value then reanimate them for repeated triggers.
