Lotho, Corrupt Shirriff
The Commander
Guide
Gameplan
Lotho turns every player's second spell of the turn into a Treasure for you (at the cost of 1 life each), so you generate explosive mana while everyone plays Magic. Use storm-style cheap spells, free spells, and your opponents' decks to flood the board with Treasures, then convert that mana into a game-ending payoff like a big X-spell, a combo, or a wide token swarm. Early turns build mana rocks and lifegain to offset the drain; mid-game you cast multiple spells per turn yourself to snowball Treasures.
Strengths
- Generates Treasures off opponents' spells, giving you mana advantage in any pod
- Cheap 2-mana commander that comes down early and snowballs
- Treasures enable explosive ramp into X-spells, big payoffs, and combos
- Pairs with sacrifice/aristocrat synergies and artifact-matters themes
Weaknesses
- Constant life loss can add up fast against fast or wide pods
- Relies somewhat on opponents casting multiple spells to maximize value
- Fragile body that's easy to remove, slowing the Treasure engine
- No built-in protection or evasion; can be ignored or chump-blocked
Key Cards
- Reckless Firebrand — Cheap spells let you trigger your own second-spell Treasure repeatedly.
- Storm-Kiln Artificer — Each spell makes Treasures, stacking with Lotho for explosive mana.
- Dockside Extortionist — Treasures already on board fuel a massive Treasure burst off opponents.
- Mayhem Devil — Every Treasure sacrifice pings, turning your mana engine into a damage engine.
- Revel in Riches — Treasure count provides an alternate win condition perfectly aligned with Lotho.
- Smothering Tithe — Doubles down on punishing opponents' spellcasting for explosive mana.
Upgrade Path
Lean into Treasure doublers and artifact payoffs like Smothering Tithe, Storm-Kiln Artificer, and Pitiless Plunderer, plus aristocrat drains to offset and capitalize on your life loss. Add efficient spell-density and rituals so you reliably hit two spells a turn, then top with a combo or alternate wincon like Revel in Riches. Protect Lotho with cheap recursion (Phyrexian Reclamation) and counterspell insurance to keep the engine online.
