Beregond of the Guard
The Commander
Whenever Beregond or another Human you control enters, creatures you control get +1/+1 and gain vigilance until end of turn.
Guide
Gameplan
Flood the board with Humans, then turn each one entering into a temporary anthem that pumps your whole team and grants vigilance, letting you attack and still hold back blockers. You win by going wide and tall in the same turn, blinking or flickering Humans to retrigger the buff, and overwhelming the table before they stabilize.
Strengths
- Repeatable team-wide +1/+1 and vigilance that scales with how many Humans enter per turn
- Mono-white means consistent mana and access to the best tribal/anthem support
- Vigilance lets you race aggressively while staying defended
- Cheap commander at four mana that immediately impacts the board
Weaknesses
- Mono-white struggles with card advantage and ramp compared to other colors
- Board wipes are devastating to a go-wide creature strategy
- The buff is temporary, so removing Beregond neuters the engine
- Limited interaction and few answers to combo or fast decks
Key Cards
- Thalia's Lieutenant — Doubles down as a Human payoff, growing your whole team whenever Humans enter just like Beregond.
- Conqueror's Galleon — Repeatable blink and token generation pairs with white's flicker tools to retrigger entries.
- Skullclamp — Solves mono-white's card draw problem by sacrificing small Human tokens for two cards each.
- Cathars' Crusade — Stacks permanent counters every time a creature enters, turning Beregond's tempo buffs into a lasting board.
- Mentor of the Meek — Converts your wide stream of small Humans into sustained card advantage.
- Akroma's Will — A one-shot finisher granting evasion and protection to your buffed army for a lethal alpha strike.
Upgrade Path
Add more efficient Human payoffs and anthems (Thalia's Lieutenant, Adeline, Coat of Arms) plus repeatable blink to abuse entry triggers. Shore up white's weaknesses with card advantage (Skullclamp, Welcoming Vampire, Mentor of the Meek) and ramp/protection (Smothering Tithe, Heroic Intervention's white equivalent Flawless Maneuver, Teferi's Protection). Finish with a reliable haymaker like Akroma's Will or Approach of the Second Sun to close games before wraths reset you.
