Blitzwing, Cruel Tormentor // Blitzwing, Adaptive Assailant
The Commander
More Than Meets the Eye (You may cast this card converted for
.)
At the beginning of your end step, target opponent loses life equal to the life that player lost this turn. If no life is lost this way, convert Blitzwing.
Living metal (During your turn, this Vehicle is also a creature.)
At the beginning of combat on your turn, choose flying or indestructible at random. Blitzwing gains that ability until end of turn.
Whenever Blitzwing deals combat damage to a player, convert it.
Guide
Gameplan
Cast Blitzwing on the robot side (or pay More Than Meets the Eye for ) and grind one opponent down with repeatable life loss, then double it on your end step to halve their life total every turn. Stack symmetrical or targeted life-loss effects so the doubling closes the gap fast, while the Vehicle mode chips in evasive or indestructible combat damage when you need to convert sides. You're a focused, single-target assassin who can also turn a chaotic board's drain triggers into lethal in one swing.
Strengths
- Exponential clock: doubling life lost each turn means even a 10-life hit becomes a 20-life loss, snowballing toward lethal
- Mono-black gives access to the format's best tutors, removal, and life-drain density
- Recurs easily and is hard to answer permanently since it flips between artifact and creature modes
- Punishes any incidental damage you deal an opponent during the turn, including your own attacks and burn/drain effects
Weaknesses
- Single-target by design—slow to pressure a three-opponent table evenly
- Front side is purely an end-step engine with no immediate board impact unless flipped
- Random flying/indestructible choice makes the Vehicle's combat unreliable
- Vulnerable to lifegain, fog effects, and artifact/creature removal between your turns
- Color-locked to black, so no efficient way to protect it or interact at instant speed beyond black's toolbox
Key Cards
- Tree of Perdition — Swap an opponent's life to 13, deal a chunk of damage, and Blitzwing's end step doubles the loss for a near-instant kill.
- Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose — Turns your own life loss/drain payoffs into reciprocal damage that Blitzwing then doubles.
- Bolas's Citadel — Generates repeatable self-life-loss and card advantage; pair with doublers to convert that into opponent pressure.
- Sheoldred, the Apocalypse — A premier mono-black engine that drains opponents on every draw, feeding Blitzwing's end-step trigger.
- Gray Merchant of Asphodel — A massive single-burst drain that Blitzwing's end step can double for a knockout blow.
- Liliana's Caress — Stacks discard-based life loss that compounds with the end-step doubling.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Dark Ritual, Jet Medallion) and tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to assemble life-loss doublers consistently, and lean into instant-win pieces like Tree of Perdition + Vito or Gray Merchant loops. Improve resilience with recursion (Phyrexian Reclamation, Feldon-style returns) and protection, and tune the manabase with Cabal Coffers, Nykthos, and Urborg to fuel big drain spells. Cut purely incremental drain for high-impact burst effects since Blitzwing rewards spiking one opponent's life loss in a single turn.

Win Conditions
- ▸Doubling a large single-turn life loss (Gray Merchant, Tree of Perdition) into a lethal end-step drain
- ▸Incremental end-step doubling grinding opponents from 40 to zero over several turns
- ▸Combat damage from the Vehicle side plus drain doublers like Vito for a swing kill
- ▸Aristocrats drain engines (Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat) amplified across the table
Archetypes
- Aristocrats/Drain — Every blood-token, drain, and sacrifice trigger that hits an opponent gets doubled on your end step.
- Control — Mono-black removal and disruption keep you alive while the inevitable doubling clock grinds an opponent out.
- Combo — Pairing Blitzwing with life-swap (Tree of Perdition) or repeatable drain enables one-turn-kill loops.
- Voltron/Vehicle — Living metal plus evasion lets Blitzwing attack and double its own combat damage by converting on hit.
