Boromir, Gondor's Hope
The Commander
Whenever Boromir enters or attacks, look at the top six cards of your library. You may reveal a Human or artifact card from among them and put it into your hand. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order.
Guide
Gameplan
Boromir is a UW value engine that digs six cards deep every time he enters or attacks, fueling a wide Human tribal or artifact-heavy aggro-midrange board. You curve out Humans, deploy anthems and equipment, and use Boromir's card advantage to keep the pressure relentless while protecting your attackers. Win through combat with a tall or wide board, or by grinding opponents out with superior card flow.
Strengths
- Repeatable card advantage on both ETB and attack, rewarding blink and recursion
- Color access to the best protection, removal, and anthem effects in UW
- Flexible build—works for Humans tribal, artifacts, or equipment Voltron
- Cheap commander at 4 MV that contributes the turn it lands
Weaknesses
- Card selection is narrow—only hits Humans or artifacts, so whiffs happen with off-tribe lands
- UW lacks ramp and big mana, so explosive turns are hard
- No evasion or protection built in, so Boromir dies to removal and chump blocks easily
- Limited interaction with graveyard and recursion-heavy strategies compared to other colors
Key Cards
- Adeline, Resplendent Cathar — A premier white Human that floods the board with tokens and scales with attackers alongside Boromir.
- Thalia's Lieutenant — Anthem and counters payoff that turns a Human-heavy Boromir board into a fast clock.
- Skullclamp — As an artifact it's findable off Boromir and turns excess Human tokens into a card-draw engine.
- Esper Sentinel — A Human artifact-synergy creature that punishes opponents and is easy to retrieve with Boromir's dig.
- Brought Back — Protects key creatures and enables value recursion to retrigger ETB effects.
- Swords to Plowshares — Best-in-class white removal to clear blockers and keep Boromir attacking safely.
Upgrade Path
Add more cheap protection (Mother of Runes, Giver of Runes) and recursion (Ephemerate, Restoration Angel) to abuse repeat ETB triggers and keep Boromir alive. Tighten the curve toward only the most impactful Humans and artifacts so Boromir whiffs less, and add evasion or overrun effects like Coat of Arms or mass anthem to convert your wide board into reliable kills. Improve the mana with fast rocks (Arcane Signet, Fellwar Stone) and a clean dual-land base to deploy threats ahead of curve.
