The Second Doctor
The Commander
Players have no maximum hand size.
How Civil of You — At the beginning of your end step, each player may draw a card. Each opponent who does can't attack you or permanents you control during their next turn.
Guide
Gameplan
The Second Doctor is a UW Doctor commander built to abuse oversized hands and the flexible attack-deterrence stapled to his end step. You ramp into him, refill with card draw, and use the no-maximum-hand-size clause to build toward a hand-size payoff or a control board while opponents either skip drawing or temporarily can't swing at you. As a Doctor, he wants a Companion partner like Jodie Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith, or another Companion to give the deck direction.
Strengths
- No maximum hand size synergizes with mass-draw payoffs and prevents discard-to-hand-size
- Built-in pillow-fort effect that slows opponents from attacking you each turn
- Naturally low curve commander (4 MV) in efficient UW colors with strong control tools
- Pairs with any Companion partner for Doctor's Companion deckbuilding flexibility
Weaknesses
- His ability symmetrically helps opponents draw cards, accelerating the whole table
- Provides no direct way to win on his own — needs a dedicated payoff
- UW lacks reliable interaction-free combo and struggles against fast graveyard/reanimator strategies
- The attack restriction only protects you, not your teammates, and is opt-in for opponents
Key Cards
Upgrade Path
Add a strong Companion partner (Sarah Jane Smith or Romana II) to convert the extra draws into board presence, and lean into hand-size and storm-of-cards payoffs like Nezahal, Primal Tide, Faerie Mastermind, and Mind's Desire-adjacent value. Tighten the curve with premium UW interaction (Swords to Plowshares, Cyclonic Rift, Mana Drain) and add fast mana such as Sol Ring and Mana Crypt; finish with a deterministic wincon like Approach of the Second Sun or an infinite-draw combo so the symmetrical card advantage doesn't simply fuel your opponents.Ezahal.Ezahal, Primal Tide.Ezahahal.

Win Conditions
- ▸Hand-size or massive card-advantage payoffs like Nezahal, Primal Tide or Sphinx's Tutelage style mill
- ▸Pinging the table out with control finishers such as Approach of the Second Sun
- ▸Beating down with a buffed Companion partner protected by the pillow-fort clause
- ▸Locking the board with counterspells and wraths, then closing via Elder Land Wurm or a flier
Archetypes
- Control — UW counterspells and board wipes plus his pillow-fort clause let you durdle to a powerful late game while drawing extra cards.
- Hand Size Matters — The no-maximum-hand-size rider turns cards like The Locust God-style draw and hand-size payoffs into game-enders.
- Group Hug / Pillow Fort — He hands out cards while disincentivizing attacks, letting you play politics and outvalue the table.
- Voltron with a Companion — His attack deterrence keeps you safe while a Companion-partner build assembles an evasive threat.
