Captain Storm, Cosmium Raider
The Commander
Whenever an artifact you control enters, put a +1/+1 counter on target Pirate you control.
Guide
Gameplan
Deploy a cheap Pirate board, then chain artifacts (Treasures, equipment, cheap cantripping artifacts) to repeatedly stack +1/+1 counters and beat down fast in the Izzet colors. Captain Storm is a 2-mana commander that wants to come down early and pressure life totals before opponents stabilize. You snowball counters across multiple Pirates and close with wide, evasive aggression.
Strengths
- Extremely cheap commander that pressures from turn 2-3
- Treasure synergies double as ramp and counter triggers
- Pirate tribal evasion (menace/unblockable) makes counters lethal fast
- Izzet card advantage keeps the aggression refueled
Key Cards
- Dockside Extortionist — Floods the board with Treasures, each triggering Captain Storm for multiple counters at once.
- Ramos, Dragon Engine — Not Pirate-specific but illustrative—prioritize cheap artifact ETBs; Treasures and clue tokens repeatedly fire the ability.
- Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator — Generates Treasures off Pirate combat damage, fueling both ramp and Captain Storm triggers.
- Breeches, Brazen Plunderer — Another Pirate Treasure engine that turns combat into artifact ETBs and counters.
- Hellkite Tyrant — A finisher that steals artifacts and provides an artifact-based alternate win in heavy-artifact builds.
- Coastal Piracy — Draws a card whenever a Pirate connects, refueling the aggressive game plan.
Upgrade Path
Lower the curve and add more cheap artifact-token generators (Dockside Extortionist, Brass's Bounty, Pitiless Plunderer) so each turn fires multiple triggers; add proliferate effects and counter doublers to multiply value. Improve protection with cheap counterspells and recursion for the commander, and tighten the Pirate package with strong evasive bodies (Ramirez DePietro, Malcolm) plus efficient interaction to push toward higher power.
Core Cards
The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.
Win Conditions
- ▸Wide Pirate beatdown with stacked +1/+1 counters and evasion
- ▸Voltron a single evasive Pirate into one-shot range
- ▸Treasure-fueled X spells or Hellkite Tyrant artifact theft as backup
- ▸Proliferate-amplified counters turning a stalled board lethal
Archetypes
- Pirate Tribal Aggro — Captain Storm pumps your Pirate creatures directly, rewarding a wide evasive tribal board.
- Artifacts/Treasure — Every artifact ETB is a counter trigger, so Treasure and token-artifact engines are core.
- +1/+1 Counters — The commander manufactures counters, enabling proliferate and counter-payoff support.
- Spellslinger lean — Izzet identity lets you splice in artifact-token generators and cheap interaction to protect the assault.
