Chainer, Nightmare Adept
The Commander
Discard a card: You may cast a creature spell from your graveyard this turn. Activate only once each turn.
Whenever a nontoken creature you control enters, if you didn't cast it from your hand, it gains haste until your next turn.
Guide
Gameplan
Fill your graveyard with powerful creatures, then loop them back onto the battlefield via Chainer's discard ability, getting free hasty attackers each turn. You generate card advantage and value by discarding cards you'd rather not cast and recasting big threats from the yard, then close games with reanimation payoffs and recursive beaters. Turn to turn you're sculpting your graveyard, swinging with haste, and grinding opponents out of resources.
Strengths
- Built-in recursion makes Chainer immune to spot removal value loss and turns the graveyard into a second hand
- Free haste on reanimated/blinked/cheated-in creatures enables explosive surprise attacks and immediate ETB-to-attack synergy
- Excellent with discard outlets, looters, and dredge to fuel both hand and yard
- Deep BR support for reanimation, sacrifice, and aristocrats lines
Weaknesses
- Graveyard hate (Rest in Peace, Bojuka Bog) cripples the entire strategy
- Chainer's ability is limited to once per turn, capping the loop's speed
- No card draw or ramp baked in—relies on support pieces to keep gas flowing
- Vulnerable to a stax/tax environment that punishes recasting commanders
Key Cards
- Bone Miser — Turns Chainer's discards into mana, cards, and tokens, making every activation pure profit.
- Putrid Imp — A repeatable discard outlet that fills your graveyard to feed Chainer every turn.
- Buried Alive — Tutors three creatures straight into the yard ready to be recast with haste.
- Worldgorger Dragon — With a reanimation outlet it forms an infinite mana/ETB loop, and Chainer can recur it from the yard.
- Faldorn, Dread Wolf Herald — Reanimation/cheat synergy that pairs with Chainer's haste grant for aggressive token pressure.
- Anje Falkenrath — A free repeatable rummaging outlet that loots and fuels both halves of the deck.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Dark Ritual, Jeska's Will) and premium discard outlets to activate Chainer earlier and more efficiently. Tighten the creature suite around high-impact ETBs and reanimation targets, and include a compact combo line like Worldgorger Dragon plus an Animate Dead effect. Round out with graveyard-hate protection and a couple of tutors to assemble your engine consistently.
