Mogis, God of Slaughter
The Commander
Indestructible
As long as your devotion to black and red is less than seven, Mogis isn't a creature.
At the beginning of each opponent's upkeep, Mogis deals 2 damage to that player unless they sacrifice a creature of their choice.
Guide
Gameplan
Mogis is a punisher/group slug commander: you grind every opponent's life total down with relentless damage triggers and symmetrical 'pay or suffer' effects while keeping yourself safe. Early game you ramp and drop sources of incremental damage, then let the table bleed out from a thousand cuts. Mogis himself taxes opponents each upkeep (lose a creature or take 2), and as an indestructible god he's nearly impossible to remove.
Strengths
- Indestructible commander that's hard to interact with and survives board wipes
- Hits all opponents at once, making it strong in multiplayer slugfests
- Damage doesn't care about creatures, lifegain (somewhat), or blockers
- Punishment effects pressure opponents no matter what they do
- Low commander cost (4) leaves mana for nonstop value pieces
Weaknesses
- Damage output can be slow; games drag and you become the archenemy
- Lifegain decks can outpace incremental burn
- No card advantage built into the commander itself
- Devotion 7 to swing as a creature is rarely reached
- Vulnerable to fast combo decks that ignore life totals
Key Cards
- Citadel of Pain — Punishes the open mana strategies blue control decks rely on, multiplying your slug damage.
- Manabarbs — Turns every land tap into damage across the table, accelerating the clock dramatically.
- Polluted Bonds — Drains opponents for every land they play while gaining you life, a premier symmetric punisher.
- Sulfuric Vortex — Cheap recurring burn that also shuts off opponents' lifegain to keep them in burn range.
- Bitter Reunion — Cheap card draw and ramp-adjacent value, but really you want pieces like Wheel of Misfortune for refuel.
- Pyrohemia — Repeatable board control and reach that can finish low-life tables in a pinch.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and ramp (Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Fellwar Stone) so you can deploy multiple punishers per turn and snowball. Include lifegain hate (Sulfuric Vortex, Everlasting Torment) to stop the format's biggest counter, plus card advantage like Phyrexian Arena and Outpost Siege to avoid running dry. To close faster, run scalable burn finishers (Fall of the Titans, Comet Storm) and consider a compact combo backup so you aren't relying solely on slow damage in fast pods.

Win Conditions
- ▸Incremental burn from Mogis plus stacked punisher enchantments draining all opponents out
- ▸Big X burn or symmetrical mass damage finishers like Fall of the Titans or Star of Extinction
- ▸Connecting with Mogis as a 7/5 once devotion is high enough, or via extra-combat/burn reach
- ▸Aristocrats drains stacking with sacrifice triggers
Archetypes
- Group Slug — Mogis and stacked damage-per-action enchantments grind every opponent's life total simultaneously.
- Stax/Punisher — Symmetric 'pay life or sacrifice' effects pair with Mogis to make every choice cost opponents resources.
- Aristocrats — Mogis's sacrifice trigger and life-loss synergies support sacrifice payoffs like Blood Artist effects.
- Burn/Spellslinger — Direct damage spells and X-burn finishers close out tables Mogis has softened up.
