Cloud, Midgar Mercenary
The Commander
When Cloud enters, search your library for an Equipment card, reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle.
As long as Cloud is equipped, if a triggered ability of Cloud or an Equipment attached to it triggers, that ability triggers an additional time.
Guide
Gameplan
Cloud is a mono-white Voltron/Equipment commander who tutors up your best Equipment on cast, then suits up to double every relevant trigger. You play cheap aggressive Equipment and trigger-heavy gear, attach it all to Cloud, and beat down with a doubled-up, hexproof-or-protected threat while value triggers snowball your board.
Strengths
- Built-in Equipment tutor every time he enters, so you find your key piece consistently
- Doubles ETB/attack/combat triggers from Cloud and his Equipment for huge value swings
- Cheap 2-mana commander recasts easily after removal
- Mono-white gives access to powerful protection, anthems, and Equipment recursion
- Doubled draw/lifegain/token triggers keep him relevant beyond pure combat
Weaknesses
- Classic Voltron fragility: targeted removal or sweepers can blow you out fast
- Doubling only works while equipped, so unequip/disenchant effects shut it off
- Mono-white struggles for card advantage and ramp compared to other colors
- Vulnerable to commander tax if repeatedly killed without protection
- Equipment-light gameplans collapse if Cloud is answered before suiting up
Key Cards
- Buster Sword — Cloud's signature Equipment with combat triggers that the commander happily doubles.
- Sword of Feast and Famine — Protection from two colors plus untapped lands and discard, all doubled when Cloud is equipped.
- Puresteel Paladin — Free Equipment attaching with metalcraft turns Cloud into a rapidly assembled threat.
- Sigarda's Aid — Flash in Equipment and attach for free at instant speed to dodge removal and add triggers.
- Stoneforge Mystic — Cheats expensive Equipment into play and tutors alongside Cloud's own search.
- Swiftfoot Boots — Hexproof and haste protect your Voltron threat and let Cloud swing the turn he lands.
Upgrade Path
Add the full Sword cycle and efficient enablers like Stoneforge Mystic, Puresteel Paladin, and Sigarda's Aid to assemble threats faster and cheaper. Lean into protection (Swiftfoot Boots, Lightning Greaves, Flawless Maneuver) so your investment survives, and include strong mono-white staples like Smothering Tithe and Esper Sentinel to fix white's card and mana issues. Trim cute one-off Equipment for high-impact gear whose triggers you actually want doubled.
